Abstract: Embodiments of a mixer of a Near field communication (NFC) receiver device and a method for operating a mixer of an NFC receiver device are disclosed. In an embodiment, a mixer of an NFC receiver device includes an input unit from which an input signal is received, a sample and hold circuit configured to sample the input signal and to store electrical charge based on the sampled input signal in order to generate a differential output signal, a control unit configured to switch the sample and hold circuit between different operational modes based on whether the input signal is a single-ended input signal or a differential input signal, and a differential output unit from which the differential output signal is output. Other embodiments are also described.

Abstract: The present invention provides for a method and system for compensating phase offset caused by a matching network and antenna of a communications device. The method comprises: generating a mapping that correlates phase offset with a characteristic parameter; measuring the characteristic parameter for the communications device; using the measured characteristic parameter and the mapping to determine a phase offset for the communications device; and using the determined phase offset to compensate for the phase offset caused by the matching network and antenna of the communications device. The present invention also provides for a method and system for measuring a phase offset caused by a matching network and antenna of a communications device.

Abstract: This specification discloses methods and systems providing reader-mode performance enhancement for operating a device that communicates via inductive coupling. In reader-mode, Tx (transmitter) power of a reader device is maximized even though for some tags, the communication distance is limited by Rx (receiver) sensitivity. Therefore, power is wasted. Even worse, a too highly boosted Tx power demands a high Rx dynamic range and consequently a low Rx sensitivity. In turn, the communication distance may even be degraded by a too highly boosted Tx power. Therefore, in some embodiments, reader-mode performance enhancement is based on backing off Tx (transmitter) power when not needed (energy distance>communication distance) to save power and/or to relax reader-mode Rx (receiver) sensitivity requirements. In some embodiments, the backing off of Tx (transmitter) is also based on a sensor determining a geometric position/location of a reader device relative to a tag-mode device.

Abstract: This specification discloses methods and devices for emulating a tag device that communicates via inductive coupling, such as a NFC (Near Field Communication) tag device. In some embodiments, this specification discloses methods and devices to use this tag device “emulation” for testing, validating, calibrating, and characterizing a reader device. In some embodiments, a tag emulation device can emulate movement of the tag emulation device relative to the reader device by changing configuration parameters of the tag emulation device and by not actually moving the tag emulation device relative to the reader device.
