A novel fuel composition contains ethanol or gasohol plus, as a wear-inhibiting additive, a quaternary ammonium reaction product of an ether amine (R-O-R").sub.a -NH.sub.3-a, typically C.sub.13 H.sub.27 -O-(CH.sub.2).sub.3 -NH.sub.2 and a phosphate or phosphonate, typically tetradecyl phosphonate.

A method has been developed to solubilize hydroxy S-triazines containing at least one hydroxy function in diesel fuel and to enhance their overall thermal stability. The products which result from the full or partial encapsulation of hydroxy-S-triazine with calix[8]arene have unique and novel properties and reduce or eliminate nitrogen oxides level in diesel fuel.

A method of compatibilization asphaltenes containing bituminous liquids which process comprises:a) reacting an asphaltene with phosphorous trichloride to form a phosphochlorinated asphaltene containing from about 0.01 wt % to about 20 wt % phosphorous;b) reacting the phosphochlorinated asphaltene with an equimolar amount of aliphatic or aromatic amines and polyamines selected from the group consisting of:(i) a piperzine;(ii) an aliphatic amine;(iii) an alkyl piperdize;(iv) an aligomeric mixed polyether aliphatic terminal diamine;(v) an oligomeric polyether aliphatic terminal amine;(vi) an oligermic polyether aliphatic terminal triamine;(vii) a substituted aromatic polyether terminal amine; and(viii) an oligomeric or polymeric amine to produce a capatibilized asphaltene; and(c) recovering the asphaltene product.

A material having a use as a detergent in a motor fuel composition is the reaction product of an aldehyde, a phenoxy acid, and a mono- or diamine, wherein the aldehyde includes a hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to about 10 carbon atoms and the phenoxy acid has the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R is any hydrocarbon radical or oxygen-containing hydrocarbon radical of from 1 to about 36 carbon atoms with the carbon atom adjacent to the carboxylic acid functional group having at least one active hydrogen atom, and x varies from about 1 to 3. The monoamine useful in forming the reaction product has the formula: ##STR2## wherein X, X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 can be any hydrocarbon radical having from about 6 to about 36 carbon atoms, and wherein X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 can be a hydrogen atom. The diamine has the formula: ##STR3## wherein z varies from about 1 to 3, R.sup.1 is any hydrocarbon radical or oxygen substituted hydrocarbon radical having from about 6 to 36 carbon atoms and R.sup.2 is a hydrogen or a methyl group.

A liquid jet fuel composition comprising:(a) a major portion of a liquid fuel; and(b) a minor effective portion of a thermal stabilizing additive prepared by(i) reacting a polyamine, an aldehyde and a phenol containing active hydrogen to form a phenol - aldehyde - amine condensate; and(ii) reacting said phenol - aldehyde - amine condensate and a succinic acid anhydride bearing a polyolefin - derived substituent containing residual unsaturation, thereby forming a phenol - aldehyde amine Mannich condensate polyamine succinimide product additive; and(iii) recovering said product additive.
