In one embodiment, when an HDD has recognized detection result data of a fall sensor to indicate a fall, the HDD unloads a head slider from above a disk to a stand-by position. In order to acquire a suitable fingerprint image by correcting an elongated fingerprint image, a line sensor acquires fingerprint image as a plurality of line-shaped images. A computation unit computes a similarity value by use of an evaluation function for evaluating the degree of similarity between the line-shaped images. The similarity value represents the degree of similarity between a first line-shaped image and a second line-shaped image which serve as a similarity evaluation target and are included in the plurality of the line-shaped image. A compression unit compresses the first line-shaped image and the second line-shaped image when the similarity value is equal to or larger than a predetermined threshold value to generate a new line-shaped image. A generation unit generates the entire fingerprint image by combining the new line-shaped image with the other line-shaped images.

The HDD as an embodiment of the present invention, upon receiving a request for switching to a power-save mode (PMREQ) from the host, judges whether the serial interface should be switched to the power-save mode based on the execution status of the command. When the HDD has determined not to switch the serial interface to the power-save mode, the HDD transmits a negative response (PMNACK) to the host and keep the serial interface in the active mode. By denying switching to a power-save mode when data transfer is executed within a short period of time, etc., it is possible to prevent reduction in performance of the data storage device.

Embodiments of the invention improve power management in a data storage device which executes serial data communication with a host. In one embodiment, a HDD executes a reset process from a sleep mode (clock inactive) as being triggered by a control signal that is not based on a clock from the host. Even during a period in which the system clock is suspended, the HDD is able to receive the control signal from the host. In responding to the control signal and by activating a circuit required for serial data transmission, the HDD is enabled to receive a software reset command from the host via a serial data transmission circuit. With such an arrangement, the HDD can receive the software reset command from the host, and in responding to the reception of the command, the HDD can be reset to the normal active mode.

In a novel method for controlling a disk apparatus having an interface, command storage, and data storage, one or more commands are received from an external apparatus via the interface, and the one or more commands are held in the command storage. A command to be next executed is selected from among the one or more commands and dispatched for execution. It is determined whether an error relating to accessing the data storage has arisen during execution of the selected command. If so, the selected command is restored to the command storage. A subsequent command to be next executed may then be selected. In one described embodiment, an estimated seek time for the selected command is determined, and it is judged that an error has arisen if actual seek time of the selected command exceeds the estimated seek time.
