Organic inherently conductive polymers, such as those based on polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene, are formed in-situ onto polymeric surfaces that are chemically activated to bond ionically the conductive polymers to the substrates. The polymeric substrate is preferably a preshaped or preformed thermoplastic film, fabric, or tube, although other forms of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers can be used as the substrates for pretreatment using, most preferably, phosphonylation-based processes followed by exposure to an oxidatively polymerizable compound capable of forming an electrically conductive polymer. The resultant conductive surface imparts unique properties to the substrates and allows their use in antistatic clothing, surface conducting films for electronic components and the like, and electromagnetic interference shielding.

A coating and tubing fluid for sutures, especially gut sutures, is provided. The coating composition includes linseed oil, an organic solvent and a catalyst. The tubing fluid includes water, a softening agent, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alcohol and a lubricant of fatty acids, fatty acid alcohols and/or triglycerides of fatty acids. Gut sutures coated with the coating composition may be stored or packaged in the tubing fluid to provide sutures with improved flexibility, pliability, run-down performance and superior resistance to fraying and breaking.

Composite suture of multifilament silk embedded in a highly flexible, hydrophobic highly deformable matrix made of thermoplastic elastomer. This suture exhibits minimal irritation to living tissue and retains its strength in vivo for extended periods of time and also retains the desirable handling qualities of silk. The suture is prepared by treating a multifilament silk suture with a solution of a suitable polymer in a solvent and heating the moving suture to obtain a continuous impregnation of the silk with the elastomer.

Synthetic filaments composed of homopolymers and copolymers of poly(alkylene oxalates) are absorbable in animal tissue with minimal adverse tissue reaction. Polymers prepared by reacting a dialkyl oxalate with an alkylene diol are melt spun and drawn to obtain oriented fibers having good tensile properties and a high level of flexibility and softness. The filaments are particularly useful in the preparation of surgical prosthesis comprising woven or knitted fabrics and meshes. Other absorbable surgical devices including films and molded items may also be prepared from the disclosed polymer.
