Polymeric foams having nanocellular morphology are formed from a polymeric material having structural units derived from 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(hydroxyphenyl)phthalimidine compound. The foams include a plurality of cells having an average diameter of less than 1 micron. Processes for forming the foams include melting a polymeric material having structural units derived from 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(hydroxyphenyl)phthalimidine compounds; diffusing a blowing agent into the polymeric material to form a mixture; nucleating bubbles in the mixture is at a sufficient temperature and pressure to enable the production of cells having an average diameter of less than 1 micron; stabilizing the cells; and forming the mixture into a desired shape.

A method for producing a transparent article comprises the steps of melt transesterifying a monomer mixture in the presence of a transesterification catalyst to produce a hydroquinone polycarbonate copolymer product comprising greater than 45 mole percent of structural units derived from the hydroquinone. The monomer mixture comprises a hydroquinone, at least one aromatic dihydroxy compound other than the hydroquinone, and a carbonic acid diester. The hydroquinone polycarbonate copolymer product is then heated to a highest processing temperature of 5° C. to 20° C. above a maximum melting melt temperature for the hydroquinone copolymer product for a sufficient period of time to render the hydroquinone polycarbonate copolymer product transparent upon cooling to ambient temperature; and cooling the hydroquinone polycarbonate copolymer product to produce the transparent article. The method can also be used for producing transparent hydroquinone polycarbonate copolymers, which can be used for producing the transparent articles.

A composition comprising a compatible blend of i) 15 to 45 wt % of a linear poly (arylene sulfide), ii) 50 to 85 wt % of a polyetherimide sulfone; and iii) 1 to 3 wt % of a novolac resin having an average of 2 or more epoxy groups per molecule. The composition can comprise a polyetherimide. An article made from the composition has a property selected from the group of (i) tensile strength greater than or equal to 90 megaPascals (MPa), as determined by ASTM D638, (ii) an impact strength of greater than or equal to 3 kiloJoules per square meter (kJ/m2), as determined by ASTM D256, (iii) an elongation at break greater than or equal to 3% as determined by ASTM D638, (iv) a heat distortion temperature greater than or equal to 160° C. as determined by ASTM D648, and combinations of two or more of the foregoing properties.

The crystallinity enhancement operation may be conducted in the presence of dihydroxyorganic monomers and may be followed by a solid state polymerization operation.
