Abstract:
Coating compositions capable of liquid application to substrates consist essentially of a curable film forming polyol-containing component and an organic reactive diluent. The reactive diluent is an organic compound containing a primary or secondary hydroxyl group and further characterized by having a retained solids value of greater than about 80 percent, a hydroxyl equivalent weight of from about 180 to about 800, and a liquid viscosity of less than about 10 poise at 60.degree. C. The coating compositions can be formulated to contain little or no volatile organic solvent and/or water.

Abstract:
Magnesium oxide cementitious compositions are disclosed containing salts of organo-silanols. The silanol salts are water-soluble and are characterized in having attached to the silicon atom at least one group comprising a moiety attached to the silicon atom through a substantially non-hydrolyzable silicon-carbon bond and at least one silanol group which is at least partially neutralized with a base. A magnesia composition containing one or more of these organo-silanol salts has improved casting, molding, or spraying properties, as compared to a magnesia composition lacking the silanol salt.
Abstract:
A water-diluted, ungelled, non-sedimenting polyurethane and a process for preparing such a polyurethane in an aqueous medium is disclosed. High molecular weight thermoplastic products are obtained by chain extending in aqueous medium an NCO polymer having a salt group equivalent weight of 6000 or less and substantially free of reactive hydrogen. The average functionality and equivalent ratio of the polyisocyanate and active hydrogen-containing materials used in making the NCO polymer, as well as the functionality of the chain extender, are carefully controlled so as to get high molecular weight ungelled products. Thermosetting compositions can be made by adding curing agent to the chain extended material. Curing agents can also be incorporated into the polymer molecule either in the making of the partially reacted NCO-containing prepolymer or by further reaction with the partially reacted NCO-containing prepolymer. The water-dispersed polyurethanes of the present invention are excellent film formers, capable of making coatings with a wide spectrum of desirable properties. In addition, they can be added to other water-compatible compositions to improve flexibility, hardness, drying and other coating properties.
Abstract:
A supportive wrapping for a surgical support or orthopedic cast is produced by providing a bandage material which is impregnated or coated with a molten polyurethane polymer that is crystallizable in a predetermined, delayed time period at room temperatures or at temperatures tolerable to human skin and permitting the polyurethane polymer to crystallize on the bandage material to form a strong, supportive, self adhered wrapping while standing at or cooling to room temperature.

It has been found that aqueous coating compositions comprising acid-solubilized, imine-modified, carboxylic acid group-containing acrylic resins can be electrodeposited. These compositions deposit on the cathode to provide coatings having excellent properties.
Abstract:
A stable aqueous dispersion having a particle size in the range of about 10 to 200 nanometers containing specific silanes carrying at least one hydrophobic moiety and at least one water-solubilizing moiety is used in a process for treating a cellulosic substrate resulting in a treated product. The aqueous dispersions used in treating the cellulosic substrate are stable for at least 20 days without externally added surfactant.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an aqueous composition containing a vinyl-type polymer product having hydrolyzable silyl groups which aqueous composition is stable at relatively high solids for such a composition and yet cures at relatively low temperatures upon the evaporation of water. More particularly, disclosed is a stable, aqueous, colloidal silica-free, dispersion or solution containing a solution-polymerized vinyl-type polymer having acid functionality sufficient to provide an acid value of from 5 to 160 and having a hydroxyl value of less than or equal to 10 and sufficient hydrolyzable silyl groups to provide a Si content in the range of from 0.40 to 6.0 percent by weight based on the total weight of the vinyl-type polymer. The vinyl-type polymer is characterized in that a composition consisting of at least 25 percent by weight of the polymer in water remains stable in a closed container for at least 24 hours at a temperature of 48.9 degrees Celsius. Also disclosed is a stable, aqueous, colloidal silica-free, coating composition having a total organic resin solids content of greater than or equal to 25 percent by weight, at least 50 percent by weight of the total organic resin solids content consisting of the aforesaid solution-polymerized vinyl-type polymer.
Abstract:
Disclosed are essentially zinc-free, organic coating compositions based on silicon-containing polyols comprising reaction products of hydrophobic polyols, organosilicon-containing materials, and higher monohydric alcohols, R-OH. The organosilicon-containing material comprises an organosilicon-containing substance free of certain functional groups attached directly to carbon and essentially free of alkali metal ions. The organosilicon-containing substance has atoms bonded directly to Si all of which are selected from O, N, and/or Cl. The organosilicon-containing substance also has moieties directly bonded to Si which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol. The reaction product is not capable of being gelled when subjected to a specific gel test, has a content of hydroxyl groups from the hydrophobic polyol ranging from 0.4 to 10 milliequivalents per gram of reaction product, has a content of groups, --OR, from the higher monofunctional alcohol ranging from 0.1 to 7 milliequivalents per gram of reaction product, and a content of the moieties directly bonded to Si which are displaceable of less than 1 milliequivalent per gram of reaction product. The organic coating composition also contains a curing agent for for the silicon-containing polyol selected from the group consisting of an aminoplast, a phenoplast, an isocyanate, a blocked isocyanate, a semi-blocked isocyanate, a lower-alkoxy-containing silane, and a hydrolyzed lower- alkoxy-containing silane. The coating composition is essentially free of elemental zinc and cures to an essentially organic coating.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a liquid composition comprising a mixture of (A) a hydrophobic polyol, and (B) an organosilicon-containing material. The organosilicon-containing material is substantially free of unhydrolyzed aminoalkylsilane and comprises an organosilicon-containing substance free of functional groups attached to carbon and essentially free of alkali metal ions. The organosilicon-containing substance has atoms bonded directly to silicon all of which are selected from O, N, and/or Cl. The silicon-containing substance additionally has moieties directly bonded to Si which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol. At least a part of the silicon-containing substance is hydrolyzed to a compound or a mixture of compounds which contains a residual amount of the moieties directly bonded to Si which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol. After components (A) and (B) are mixed, the composition is a homogeneous liquid which is capable of self-curing to a continuous film by reaction, with moisture and/or the hydrophobic polyol, of the residual moieties bonded directly to silicon which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol.
