The improved top dressed synthetic turf according to the patent invention provides thatch like fibers to retain top dressing and particularly the rubber or resilient particles in the dressing. The grasslike surface is formed by polyethylene co-polymer slit fibers more than two inches in height tufted through a fiberglass reinforced backing. The thatch zone fibers are dense and texturized so that they will contract to only about one inch in height after curing.
Abstract:
A carpet is tufted with a two-part primary backing. The upper, or face, backing is a conventional woven or non-woven polypropylene, and the lower, or back, backing is a stronger, open weave fabric. The tufts of yarn are sewn through both parts of the primary backing, which holds the parts together, and causes some of the back stitches to protrude for better coating with adhesive. The resulting carpet may be fully back coated, and may have a secondary backing adhered thereto. The lower backing prevents elongation, stretching and shrinking of the carpet during manufacture and subsequent processing.

A bitumen composition suitable for a carpet tile backing is provided having from 12 to 35 wt. % bitumen, from 50 to 85 wt. % of an inorganic filler such as calcium carbonate and from 0.5 to 20 wt. % of an acid functionalized polyolefin selected from acrylic acid, maleic acid and maleic anhydride grafted isotactic polypropylene. The cold flow characteristics of the composition can be improved by incorporating from 1 to 10 wt. % atactic polypropylene.

A composite elastic layer, which has improved resistance to shear force and functions both as a cushioning material and as a sound proof material, is comprised of a loop pile tufted fabric, which is made from a backing fabric and a plurality of loop piles. An elastomer composition is applied to the pile stratum of the loop pile tufted fabric. The elastomer composition infiltrates into voids between fibers of the loop pile, and forms a solid skin on the fibers of the loop pile. The composite elastic layer reinforces the elastic property of the loop pile, and on the other hand, the fiber of the loop pile also reinforces the tensile strength, especially the resistance to tearing, of the solid skin.

Carpet and textile coating compositions are formulated to include fiber or flock pieces so as to improve the tuft pull strength and dimensional stability of the carpet or textile. The coating compositions comprise 10 to 70%, by weight, of a latex binder and 30 to 90%, by weight, of at least one filler, wherein the filler comprises about 0.001 to 100%, by weight, of fiber or flock pieces. Any natural or synthetic fiber may be used in the coating compositions of this invention.

A manufacturing method for a laminated sheet comprises:coating a backing coating material on a base fabric (A) which is made of a material having a thermal deformation temperature of at least 150.degree. C., the backing coating material comprising(a) a resin aqueous emulsion and(b) 150-170 parts by weight of expandable styrene resin particles per 100 parts by weight of solids of the resin aqueous emulsion (a);stacking a base fabric (B) which is made of a material having a thermal deformation temperature of at least 150.degree. C. on the layer of backing coating material to form a laminate;compressing the laminate from at least one side so as to impregnate base fabric (B) with a portion of the coating material; andexpanding the expandable styrene resin particles and drying the resin aqueous emulsion by heating to a temperature which is higher than the softening point of the resin of the expandable styrene resin particles and which is lower than the thermal deformation temperature of base fabrics (A) and (B), thereby expanding the expandable styrene resin particles and forming a foam layer between base fabrics (A) and (B).

A thin tough glossy surface may be applied to a flexible substrate in a one step process comprising: applying an aqueous thin film of a compound of a polymer to an endless carrier belt made of a material having a low adhesion to said polymer, contacting the flexible substrate and coated carrier belt and keeping them together while they pass around a hot drum laminator at a temperature of from about 100.degree. to about 150.degree. C.The process is suitable for applying impermeable surfaces to non wovens, and foam backed carpet.
