摘要:
A printhead for an inkjet printer, with an array of nozzles for selectively ejecting drops of ink towards a print medium, and a protective structure between said nozzles and said print medium. The structure is configured so as not to obstruct ink drops ejected from the nozzles. The printhead also has an air supply for supplying positive air pressure to the protective structure, the air supply having an air intake with a filter and shut off valve for stopping air supply to the structure when the printer is in a non-printing operational mode; and, an air distribution ducting having one or more air passages in communication with the protective structure. The shut off valve has an apertured member with a plurality of apertures corresponding to each of the air passages. The apertured member is movable between a valve open position in which the air apertures are in communication with the air passages and a valve closed position in which the air apertures are not in communication with said air passages.

A print engine assembly is provided which is mountable to an inkjet printer. The print engine assembly comprises a housing for mounting to a printer and a printhead assembly and capping mechanism mounted to the housing. The printhead assembly incorporates a printhead having a plurality of nozzles for selectively ejecting drops of ink towards a print medium passing the nozzles. The printhead further has a structure that defines a space adjacent the nozzles. The capping mechanism is used to selectively cap the nozzles of the printhead. In operation, when the printhead is in a printing mode, the structure allows drops of ink ejected from the nozzles to strike the print medium while preventing contact between the nozzles and foreign bodies larger than a threshold size, and when the printhead is in a non-printing mode, the capping mechanism is engaged with the structure to provide a closed atmosphere in the space.

The present invention relates to methods for providing periodic status updates from a printer to a host system, and a printer capable of providing such status updates. A printer in accordance with the present invention includes means for generating printer status information and means for automatically sending the printer status information to the host system at periodic time intervals, without the need for a status request from the host system or a status change at the printer. The time interval and/or the status information may be configured via the host system.

Ink jet printing apparatus includes a linear array of jet modules each having an inlet for receiving ink, an outlet for re-circulating the ink, a nozzle for discharging ink in the form of droplets, and a perturbation device for causing a continuous stream of ink droplets to be discharged from the respective nozzle. The apparatus further includes an ink supply system having an inlet manifold, an outlet manifold, and a plurality of connecting passageways connecting the jet modules in parallel between the inlet and outlet manifolds. The connecting passageways connect the inlet of each jet module to the inlet manifold and the outlet of each jet module to the outlet manifold, such as to define a T-connection of each jet module with the inlet and outlet manifolds. Such a construction reduces the mass of each jet module thereby permitting printing at higher frequencies and with smaller ink droplets.

An inkjet printing mechanism includes an elongate chassis which spans a print area. A printhead assembly is mounted on the elongate chassis. The printhead assembly includes an ink distribution assembly and an array of printhead chips mounted on the ink distribution assembly to span the print area. An elongate platen assembly is mounted on the chassis such that the platen assembly spans the print area. The platen assembly includes an elongate body that defines a longitudinal platen surface for supporting a print medium during a printing operation carried out on the print medium. An elongate ink blotting member is arranged on the body. A rotating mechanism rotates the elongate body such that either the platen surface or the ink blotting member is aligned with the array of printhead chips. A lateral displacement mechanism displaces the body towards the printhead chips when the blotting member is aligned with the printhead chips and displaces the body away from the printhead when the platen surface is aligned with the printhead chips.

A reusable heat-sensitive transfer recording element which comprises a foundation and an ink-containing layer provided on the foundation, said ink-containing layer comprising porous particles impregnated with a heat-meltable ink and a binder material for bonding the particles to each other, said binder material being substantially incompatible with the heat-meltable ink. With the present transfer elements, printed images having a high optical density can be obtained from the initial use thereof and printed images having such high optical density can be obtained at every repeated use.
