Abstract:
An aluminum base alloy containing zinc, copper and magnesium together with zirconium or both zirconium and manganese and with specially controlled composition limits exhibits very high strength when thermally treated to a condition having high resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Improved products of the alloy also exhibit low quench sensitivity and, accordingly, high strength even in very thick sections. A special aging treatment produces the optimum combination of strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking properties.
Abstract:
A device for spacing conductors and for damping mechanical vibrations of a conductor, the device including a conductor clamping member mechanically connected to an adjacent member, such as another conductor clamping member, by a close wound helical spring and a pin means spaced from the spring, the spring and pin means extending between spaced arms of one of the members and through a single arm of the other member located between and spaced from the spaced arms of the one member.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for forming a sheet metal easy opening container wall in which an annular groove is formed around the periphery of a depressed central portion of a blank, a planar lip and an upstanding chuckwall are formed around the outer edge of the groove in the blank, the groove is reformed by moving portions of it radially outwardly to form a Z-wall connecting the center portion of the blank to the lip, a score line is formed in the lip to define a removable panel and the Zwall is collapsed to form an annular folded band adjacent the score line. The annular folded band is designed to shield the raw score edge on the central panel portion after separation of the panel from the can end.
Abstract:
Method of fabricating improved terminal end configurations for composite multi-metallic extrusion billets that provides a reservoir of cladding metal for the initially extrudable portions thereof by selective introduction of metal powders into discrete core and cladding cavities within a deformable shell followed by isostatic compaction thereof.
Abstract:
In soldering metal members, particularly aluminum members, chemical fluxes are employed to aid in the wetting of the parent members by the molten solder filler alloy. One such flux contains substantial amounts of zinc chloride and is mixed with volatile organic or non-aqueous solvents for use in soldering. This flux is also useful in coating metals with zinc by reaction between the metal and the flux. The stability of the flux prior to blending with the organic solvent is enhanced by forming a paste with a small amount of water.
Abstract:
An internally threaded safety closure and a container-closure combination are provided in which the container has screw threads on its neck and at least one upwardly projecting tooth adjacent the neck, and the threaded closure has an integral resiliently deflectable ring rigidly connected to its skirt through at least one bridge and having at least one downwardly projecting ratchet tooth on the ring for engaging the tooth on the container to prevent removal of the closure from the container without first flexing the ring by squeezing it or lifting it to disengage the teeth.
Abstract:
Aluminum is purified by chloridizing a molten body of aluminum in a highly efficient manner. High metal chloridization rates are achieved in a system wherein chlorine utilization efficiency is 100 percent or very closely approaches this level. The system includes a chlorine-metal contacting technique which includes an agitator and which controls and maintains contacting conditions to optimize efficiency.
Abstract:
An electrode assembly for use in an electrolytic cell having a corrosive environment comprising high temperature chlorine gas and a bath of aluminum chloride dissolved in one or more salts. The assembly comprises an electrode disposed within the cell, at least one electrical current conducting lead made of material susceptible to corrosive attack by the environment extending into the electrode, and a fluid impervious, electrically conductive sleeve disposed around the lead along at least the length thereof extending through a wall of the cell, and in contact with the electrode. The fluid impervious sleeve is effective to prevent contact of approaching corrosive constituents with the lead.

Abstract:
Tension connector assembly for cable and the like including a base spring member and a keeper spring member in opposed facing relation, each member having legs extending toward the other member and corresponding cable engaging seats defined across the legs of such member and facing the same such member, the opposing legs of the members being correspondingly offset to permit relative movement of the members toward and away from each other and corresponding overlapping alignment of the base seats and keeper seats in opposed facing relation for cooperative opposed seating engagement of the corresponding seats with a portion of a cable insertable thereacross to interconnect thereby the legs of base member with the legs of the keeper member, and adjustable tension exerting means interposed operatively between the members to urge them away from each other and in turn the opposed seats under tension against the correspondingly opposed portions of the girth of the cable adjacent thereto.
