摘要: A method of fabricating an optical fibre preform is disclosed comprising using a subtractive process on an optical monolith to define therein at least a transverse section of the optical fibre preform, wherein the transverse section comprises at least two regions with different refractive indexes. An optical fibre preform fabricated in accordance with the method is also disclosed along with a method of assembling optical components using a subtractive process to define a first interconnecting feature in or for use with a first optical component; using a subtractive process to define a second interconnecting feature in or for use with a second optical component; and coupling the first and second components together using the first and second interconnecting features such that the coupling dictates a passive alignment of the first and second components.

摘要: Disclosed is an apparatus for determining viscoelastic characteristics of at least a portion of an object. The apparatus comprises a fluidly sealable housing, comprising at least one aperture and at least one fluid inlet port and at least one resilient membrane that is operatively coupled to the housing so as to sealingly engage with the at least one aperture. The apparatus further comprises at least one actuator that is operatively coupled to the at least one inlet port and adapted to actuate the at least one resilient membrane via a working fluid that is contained within the housing, so that the at least one resilient membrane is moved towards and into engagement with at least a portion of an object at a predetermined pressure. Furthermore, the apparatus comprises at least one first sensor that is operably coupled to the membrane and that is adapted to determine at least a deformation of the at least one resilient membrane during actuation.

摘要: Described is a device for inducing crystal nucleation in a crystalliser. The device comprises a vessel for fluid and a surface abrader, wherein the surface abrader is configured to abrade a surface within the vessel to induce crystal nucleation. The friction of the abrader against the surface within the vessel creates nano-sized particulates which induce crystal nucleation. Crystal growth can then take place in the crystalliser. Also described is a crystallisation apparatus comprising the device and a crystallisation process using the device or similar. The device is significantly cheaper and more reliable than known ultrasound devices and facilitates the separation of crystal nucleation and crystal growth. The device also enables the avoidance of the use of seeding as a source of secondary nucleation.

摘要: A surface relief hologram that includes two or more patterns, each pattern being sensitive to different radiation wavelengths. The hologram is made by defining relief features that are sensitive to different wavelengths, and in particular, to one wavelength that is visible to the unaided human eye and to one wavelength that is invisible to the unaided human eye. These relief features of different sensitivities are interspersed over the surface of the substrate in which the hologram is defined. By providing two patterns of different sensitivities, when the hologram is used in a security device, security is improved. Despite this improved security, the hologram can be mass manufactured using known techniques.

摘要: A method for determining one or more parameters of a rock sample, comprising the steps of measuring the magnetic susceptibility of the sample, and determining a value of the parameter using that measured susceptibility. For example, the measured susceptibility can be used to determine fractional mineral content, permeability, cation exchange capability per unit pore volume, and flow zone indication.
