Abstract:
A photonic crystal fiber has a configuration in which a multiplicity of voids are arranged along the longitudinal direction of the fiber and with a regular sectional structure, a terminal end portion of the fiber is fusion bond sealed with a fusing material composed of a glass lower than a light propagation medium of the fiber in softening temperature, and the terminal end portion is connected to a ferrule with the fusing material. With this configuration, it is possible to obviate the lowerings in optical characteristics such as a large refractive index difference between the light propagation medium and the voids, a high light transmission efficiency, a high numerical aperture, etc., and to obviate such problems as the penetration of foreign matter into the inside of the voids, a burning failure arising from a positional staggering of the ferrule, etc.
Abstract:
An IPS (In-Plane Switching) liquid crystal display is disclosed that maintains excellent display uniformity and high aperture ratio as well as high yield during fabrication, and that includes a first transparent substrate, a second transparent substrate arranged to confront the first transparent substrate and provided with a second alignment layer, and a liquid crystal component sealed between the first transparent substrate and second transparent substrate. The first transparent substrate is provided with: a transparent insulating substrate, pixel electrodes and common electrodes that are arranged alternately and substantially parallel to each other on the transparent insulating substrate, a plurality of pixels arranged in matrix form, scan lines and switching elements for controlling the electric field applied to the pixel electrodes, signal lines, and a first alignment layer. The direction of initial orientation of liquid crystal molecules in the aperture regions has an inclination of any angle θ other than 0° and 90° with respect to the longitudinal direction of the pixel electrodes. In regions other than the aperture regions, the direction of initial orientation of the liquid crystal molecules is orthogonal to the longitudinal direction of the pixel electrodes when the dielectric constant anisotropy of the liquid crystal molecules is positive, and parallel to the longitudinal direction of pixel electrodes when the dielectric constant anisotropy is negative.
Abstract:
An ATM cell multiplexer of the present invention controls the ATM cell transmission time assigned to each cell assembler/disassembler (CLAD) based on the number of cell assembler/disassemblers (CLAD), number of connections, and connection traffic volume. Accordingly it is capable of setting in real time a main table in the ATM cell multiplexer, in which transmission authorities corresponding to a number of established connections is assigned as much as possible at equal intervals in accordance with the connections thereof.
Abstract:
An in-line switching mode LCD panel has three groups of common electrode lines corresponding to three colors defined by color layers in the pixels. The potentials of the groups of the common electrode lines are adjusted independently of one another so that the flicker level for the corresponding pixels assumes a minimum by compensating the difference in the feed-through voltage between the pixels.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a liquid discharge head having an opening for discharging liquid droplets, a wall member constituting a liquid flow path to the opening, a substrate provided with and for creating a bubble in the liquid, and a movable member supported by and fixed to the substrate with the discharge opening side thereof as a free end displaced away from the substrate by pressure produced by creating the bubble to thereby direct the pressure to the discharge opening side including the steps of preparing the substrate and movable member, filling the gap between the movable member and the substrate with a liquid photo-curing resin, spin coating the resin until the resin covers the movable member, exposing an area of the resin to light to harden a portion corresponding to the wall member, and removing the unexposed portion of the photo-curing resin.

Abstract:
In a magnetic recording medium wherein a magnetic recording layer for storing information, a carbon type protective layer for preventing damage of the magnetic recording layer and a lubrication layer are sequentially formed on a non-magnetic substrate, the carbon protective layer has a relatively smaller hydrogen content on the side nearer the lubrication layer than on the side nearer the magnetic recording layer. In a magnetic head slider having an electromagnetic conversion device mounted thereto, a carbon protective layer is laminated on at least a sliding surface side, and a lubrication layer is disposed on the carbon type protective layer. In a recording apparatus including a recording medium for storing information and a magnetic head for recording or reproducing information to and from the memory medium, a carbon protective film having a lower hydrogen content at an upper, surface portion thereof than at a lower, initial portion thereof is formed on either the recording medium or a sliding portion of the magnetic head.

An active matrix liquid crystal display having first and second substrate portions, a liquid crystal layer (#107) held therebetween, and a light-shielding metal film (#401) arranged in the second substrate portion in a matrix pattern and split into a plurality of film pieces (#401a and #401b) electrically isolated from one another. The matrix pattern is partitioned into each frame defined by two pairs of opposite ones of the film pieces. A nonconductive opaque resin (#402) is formed in a gap between the metal film patterns.

An electric shaver is provided with arched outer blades and outer blades with slit ports opened with several transversely extended parallel slits. Both outer blades are rubbed by the inner blades along their inner faces to cut a beard. Two rows of outer blades with slit ports are mounted on both sides of the arched outer blades. The outer blades with slit ports comprise rectangular parallel blades with the upper faces not exactly planar but almost planar, parallel slits open in the upper face of the rectangular parallel blades and extend from the corner of the external side to the vertical part of the external side.
