    Abstract: Compositions and methods are provided to increase the palatability of dry pet foods. The compositions comprise sorbic acid and/or a salt thereof. The compositions and methods increase the palatability without loss of crunchiness of the dry kibbles over an extended time period. The sorbic acid and/or salt thereof can be used in the base composition of the dry pet food and/or in a coating on the dry pet food, and the sorbic acid and/or salt thereof can be used without affecting the product structure.

    Abstract: The invention provides methods for promoting weight loss by an animal, promoting weight loss by an animal while preventing or minimizing loss of lean body mass by the animal, preventing a reduction in energy metabolism by an animal, reducing the risk of regaining weight by an animal after weight loss, and ameliorating undesirable animal behaviors associated with reduced caloric intake by intermittently feeding an animal a first diet containing calories that meet the animal's maintenance energy requirements and a second diet containing calories that do not meet the animal's maintenance energy requirements.     Abstract: The invention provides a composition suitable for use as an animal litter comprising a first component having a density less than that of liquid and a second component having a density of at least 5 lb/ft3 (80 mg/cm3) greater than the first component. The invention is based upon the discovery that adding liquid such as urine to a composition having two components with significant differences in density, one of which is less than the density of the liquid, will result in the component with the lesser density floating to the top of the liquid while the component with the greater density will segregate below the component with the lesser density.
