Abstract: A motor controller for an electric motor includes an enclosure and a processing device, memory device, and wireless transmitter disposed within the enclosure. The processing device is configured to control the electric motor and collect operating information from the electric motor during operation of the electric motor. The memory device is communicatively coupled to the processing device. The memory device is configured to receive and store the operating information collected during operation of the electric motor. The wireless transmitter is communicatively coupled to the processing device and the memory device. The wireless transmitter is configured to transmit the operating information stored on the memory device to a computing device disposed remotely from the electric motor.

Abstract: Methods and systems for controlling an electric motor using a motor controller including a processor are provided. The method includes transmitting, by the processor, a no-spin signal commanding the electric motor not to spin, receiving temperature information associated with a temperature of the electric motor, comparing the temperature information to a predetermined threshold temperature to determine whether the temperature is at a sufficient level to prevent icing, and adjusting current applied to the electric motor when the temperature measurement is below the predetermined threshold.

Abstract: A diagnostic device for an electric motor includes a device memory, a wireless communication interface, and a processor. The interface is coupled to the device memory and retrieves, over a first wireless channel, operating data stored in motor memory on the electric motor. The interface transmits, over the first wireless channel, operating parameters to the electric motor. The operating parameters define a test routine for the electric motor. The test routine, when carried out by the electric motor, generates test data corresponding to the operating parameters and that is written to the motor memory. The interface retrieves, over a second wireless channel, the test data stored in the motor memory. The processor is coupled to the device memory and the interface. The processor processes at least the test data to diagnose the malfunction.

The electric machine also includes an NFC antenna communicatively coupled to the motor controller and mounted such that an antenna range of the NFC antenna extends on an exterior of the electric machine housing. The NFC antenna is configured to receive a signal relating to a user command from a handheld device and relay the signal to the motor controller. The motor controller is configured to adjust an operational parameter of the motor based at least partially on the user command.

Abstract: A motor controller for an electric motor for driving a blower to generate an airflow. The motor controller includes a processor and a drive circuit configured to regulate power supplied to the motor to turn the blower. The processor computes a system resistance for the blower based on a fixed set point for a first control parameter and a feedback parameter. The processor receives an airflow rate demand value and computes an operating set point for a second control parameter based on the system resistance and the airflow rate demand value. The processor controls the drive circuit based on the operating set point to supply electrical power to the electric motor and to operate the blower to generate the airflow.

Abstract: A method of encapsulating a printed circuit board of a motor controller with a potting material includes inserting the printed circuit board into a recess formed in a base portion of an encapsulation assembly such that a bottom surface of the printed circuit board is spaced from a surface of the recess. The method also includes coupling a cover portion of the encapsulation assembly to the base portion to define a cavity therebetween. The method further includes injecting the potting material into the cavity through at least one injection port defined in at least one of the base portion and the cover portion such that the printed circuit board is at least partially coated in the potting material.

Abstract: A hydrodynamic bearing assembly includes a first member including a first engaging surface. The first member is stationary in a non-operating mode of the bearing assembly and rotates about an axis in an operational mode of the bearing assembly. The first member includes a first bore and a shaft positioned within the first bore and including an end surface. The hydrodynamic bearing assembly also includes a second member including a second bore and a second engaging surface positioned adjacent the first engaging surface. The second member is stationary in both the non-operating mode and the operational mode of the bearing assembly. The hydrodynamic bearing assembly further includes a spacer member positioned within the second bore and is configured to engage the first member to define a first gap between the first engaging surface and the second engaging surface in the non-operational mode.
