Polymer compositions containing a mixture of an elastomer and a fluoropolymer can be made by diffusing fluorinated olefins and free radical initiators in preferably swollen elastomers and polymerizing the fluorinated olefins. The resulting compositions have useful properties, such as reduced sliding friction, which makes them useful for seals in contact with moving surfaces, and for other uses.

Disclosed herein is a process in which fluorine containing olefins are polymerized using an initiation system which is a combination of a fluoroaliphatic sulfinate or sulfinic acid and chlorate, bromate or hypochlorite ions. The resulting polymer contains fewer deleterious end groups and is more stable and/or easier to process. The polymers produced are useful as thermoplastics and elastomers.

This invention relates to ionomers and to ionically conductive compositions formed therefrom. The ionomers comprise polymerized units of monomers A and monomers B, wherein monomers A are perfluoro dioxole or perfluoro dioxolane monomers, and the monomers B are functionalized perfluoro olefins having fluoroalkyl sulfonyl, fluoroalkyl sulfonate or fluoroalkyl sulfonic acid pendant groups, CF2═CF(O)[CF2]nSO2X. The ionically conductive compositions of the invention are useful in fuel cells, electrolysis cells, ion exchange membranes, sensors, electrochemical capacitors, and modified electrodes.

These compounds react under mild conditions with many nucleophiles to give CH2═C(R)CF2X, where X is derived from the nucleophile. This reaction provides a route to many substituted hexafluoroisobutylenes, which copolymerize easily with other fluoro- and hydrocarbon monomers such as vinylidene fluoride and ethylene.
