Abstract: A system includes a first heater positioned in or proximate to an exhaust aftertreatment system in exhaust gas-receiving communication with an engine, a second heater positioned downstream of the first heater, and a controller coupled to the first and second heaters. The controller is structured to determine, based on information indicative of a temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system, that the temperature is below a temperature threshold; receive information regarding a characteristic of a battery coupled to the first heater and the second heater; control the temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system without using the first or second heaters in response to determining that the characteristic of the battery is below a first threshold; and control a temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system using the first heater in response to determining that the characteristic of the battery is above the first threshold but below a second threshold.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine system includes an internal combustion engine, a controller, and an increased brake load event communicator. The internal combustion engine includes a first cylinder and a first cylinder deactivation prevention mechanism. The first cylinder is configured to be selectively activated and deactivated. The first cylinder deactivation prevention mechanism is configured to selectively prevent the first cylinder from being deactivated. The controller is communicable with the first cylinder deactivation prevention mechanism. The controller includes an increased brake load event detection module that is configured to selectively control the first cylinder deactivation prevention mechanism to prevent the first cylinder from being deactivated. The increased brake load event communicator is communicable with the controller. The increased brake load event detection module is configured to control the first cylinder deactivation prevention mechanism to prevent the first cylinder from being deactivated based on a communication from the increased brake load event communicator.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for improving the performance of an aftertreatment system by elevating its temperature above an activation temperature. According to at least one aspect of the present disclosure, the method includes injecting a quantity of a fuel into certain fueled cylinders of a plurality of combustion cylinders of an internal combustion engine, the plurality of combustion cylinders further including non-fueled cylinders. Exhaust from the fueled cylinders is directed through the aftertreatment system while uncombusted gas from the non-fueled cylinders is directed away from the aftertreatment system. In certain embodiments, the uncombusted gas may be directed into an intake manifold in fluid communication with the plurality of combustion cylinders through an orifice. The system includes an engine having exhaust valves to control flow of the exhaust and uncombusted gas and a controller configured to perform the operations of the method.

Abstract: A system includes an intake heater positioned in or proximate to an air intake of an engine, an aftertreatment system heater positioned downstream of the engine, and a controller coupled to the intake heater and the aftertreatment system heater. The controller is structured to operate the intake heater to heat air entering the engine for a predefined time period. The controller is structured to determine, based on information indicative of a temperature regarding an exhaust aftertreatment system, that the temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system is below a predefined temperature threshold. The controller is structured to continue operating the intake heater after the predefined time period responsive to the temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system being below the predefined temperature threshold.
