    Abstract: Solid-state electrodes and methods of forming solid-state electrodes and batteries are provided. The method includes contacting an electrode precursor with a liquid. The liquid includes one or more precursors of an ionically conductive polymer. The electrode precursor includes a plurality of electroactive particles and a plurality of electrolyte particles disposed on a current collector. A plurality of interparticle pores exists between the electroactive and electrolyte particles. When the electrode precursor is contacted with the liquid, the liquid flows into the interparticle pores. The one or more precursors of the ionically conductive polymer are electropolymerized so as to cause the formation of a polymeric matrix (including the ionically conductive polymer) that surrounds and embeds the plurality of electroactive particles and the plurality of electrolyte particles so as to form the solid-state electrode.

    Abstract: An electrochemical cell includes a first electrode that includes a first current collector and a first electroactive material layer disposed on or near the first current collector, a second electrode that includes a second current collector and a second electroactive material layer disposed on or near the second current collector, and a separating layer disposed between the first electroactive material layer and the second electroactive material layer. The second electroactive material layer includes a plurality of hierarchical silicon columns, each of the hierarchical silicon columns has a longest dimension perpendicular to a major axis of the second current collector. The second electroactive material layer also includes a carbonaceous network that at least partially fills interstices defined between hierarchical silicon columns of the plurality of hierarchical silicon columns. The carbonaceous network includes linked carbon atoms that define a plurality of pores.

    Abstract: The present disclosure provides a positive electroactive material for an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions. The positive electroactive material includes a nickel-rich material including a plurality of solid-state particles. Each solid-state particle has a heterogeneous structure that includes a core and a shell that at least partially coats the core. The core includes a nickel-cobalt-manganese material, and the shell includes a nickel-cobalt-aluminum material. When the nickel-rich material is represented by LiNi(1-x-y-z)CoxMnyAl2O2, the nickel-cobalt-manganese material is represented by LiNi(i-x″-(y/a))Cox″Mn(y/a)O2, and the nickel-cobalt-aluminum material is represented by LiNi(i-x″-(z/b))Cox″Al(z/b)O2, where (i) 1-x-y-z>0.5, (ii) a+b=1, (iii) zx″+bx″=x, and (iv) 1-x″-(y/a)>1-x″-(z/b). In certain variations, the core and the shell define a base structure, and the heterogeneous structure further includes a buffer layer that at least partially coats the base structure.
