摘要： A surgical retractor is provided for manipulating body tissue during endoscopic and laparoscopic surgical procedures which includes a handle assembly, an elongated body extending from the handle assembly, and a retractor assembly operatively associated with the body and defining a curvilinear tissue manipulation surface having an area which is selectively variable. In operation the retractor assembly is movable between a first position wherein the area of the tissue manipulation surface is minimized and a second position wherein the area of the tissue manipulation surface is maximized. The retractor can be designed for one handed operation.

The instrument includes a handle assembly, a tubular body extending from the handle assembly therein defining a longitudinal axis, a tool assembly associated with a distal end of the tubular body including a tool base and tool members, an electrical connector electrically associated with the tool members, electrical insulation being provided in association with electrical conducting components, a first mechanism for effectuating remote articulation of the tool assembly with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular body, and a second mechanism for effectuating remote rotation of the tool assembly about the longitudinal axis of the tubular body.

摘要： A fibrin mixture and dispenser assembly is provided for mixing a first protein component with sterile water to form a first protein solution and for dispensing the first protein solution. The first protein solution forms a biological adhesive when intermixed with a second protein solution. The second protein solution is preferably mixed and dispensed by a similar fibrin mixture and dispenser assembly. The two fibrin mixture and dispenser assemblies can be housed within a single housing. The assembly includes a piercer and a first tubular extension having grooves for providing fluid communication between a reservoir and a mixing chamber or a vial. The reservoir is also in fluid communication with a dispensing needle through a second tubular extension. The reservoir is configured to contain water which is introduced to the mixing chamber. The mixing chamber is configured to contain the first protein component. The water mixes with the first protein component within the mixing chamber to form the first protein solution. The solution is transferred to the reservoir and is dispensed via the dispensing needle. The first and second components are preferably fibrinogen and thrombin which intermix either prior to or on the application site to form a fibrin sealant.

摘要： A sterile sheath and applicator apparatus for use with a surgical instrument, includes a flexible sheath member defining a longitudinal bore at least extending through the proximal end thereof dimensioned for reception of an elongated portion of a surgical instrument and an applicator mounted adjacent the proximal end of the sheath member for facilitating positioning of the sheath member about the elongated portion of the surgical instrument. The applicator includes a hollow tube portion defining an axial bore therethrough and a handle operatively connected to the tube portion. The tube portion is sufficient in length to support the sheath member in a folded condition thereof with a major portion of the length of the sheath member disposed about the tubular portion. The handle is dimensioned to be engaged by a surgeon and manipulated to extend the sheath member about the elongated portion of the instrument to an extended position with the elongated portion at least partially received within the longitudinal bore of the sheath member.

摘要： An ultrasonic dissection and coagulation system for surgical use is provided. The system includes an ultrasonic instrument, a control module, and a pedal actuator. The ultrasonic actuator has a housing and an elongated body portion extending from the housing. An ultrasonic transducer supported within the housing is operatively connected to a cutting blade by a vibration coupler. The vibration coupler conducts high frequency vibration from the ultrasonic transducer to the cutting blade. The cutting blade has a cutting surface which is angled with respect to the longitudinal axis of the elongated body portion and, thus, with respect to the axis of vibration. A clamp member having a tissue contact surface is positioned adjacent to the blade member and is movable from an open position in which the tissue contact surface is in close juxtaposed alignment with the cutting surface to clamp tissue therebetween. The clamp member and the angled blade combine to enhance contact between tissue and the cutting surface of the blade member.

摘要： An apparatus for manipulating a surgical needle is disclosed, comprising a body portion, a first needle receiving jaw mounted for movement on a distal end of the body portion and having a first needle engaging member, a second needle receiving jaw mounted for movement on the distal end of the body portion and having a second needle engaging member, the second needle engaging member being operatively interconnected to the first needle engaging member for relative reciprocal movement therewith, wherein each of the first and second needle receiving jaws has a recess for receipt of a portion of a surgical needle therein. The first and second needle engaging members are mounted for alternate reciprocal movement into and out of locking engagement with the surgical needle. The apparatus also includes a wheel rotatably mounted within the body portion with a proximal end portion of each of the first and second needle engaging members connected to opposing sides of the wheel such that rotation of the wheel simultaneously retracts one of the needle engaging members and advances the other. Also disclosed is a method of manipulating a surgical needle inside a body cavity using a surgical instrument having a control mechanism, a first jaw and a second jaw, where at least one of the jaws is mounted for movement between a first position adjacent the other jaw and a second position spaced apart from the other jaw.

摘要： A specimen removal pouch and applicator includes a pouch fabricated from a flexible membrane, a drawstring thread forming a running noose disposed circumferentially round the end of the pouch, an endoscopic tubular portion, and a pusher rod having an aperture for permitting the passage therethrough of a single thread. When the drawstring thread is pulled, the knot is stopped at the aperture and the noose is closed, thereby closing the mouth of the pouch. The pouch is detached from the apparatus.
