Abstract: Disclosed is an immersive, augmented reality-based, enabling technology for tele-collaboration between a local surgeon and a remote surgeon during an MIS. The technology would provide realistic visual-cues to the local surgeon for the required movement of an actuated, high degree-of-freedom surgical tool during an MIS.

Abstract: A surgical system includes an adapter assembly and a tip protector. The adapter assembly includes a tubular housing, and a trocar assembly selectively receivable in the tubular housing. The tip protector includes a housing defining a channel therethrough configured for receipt of the trocar member, a first locking member movably coupled to the housing and configured to selectively engage the trocar member to lock the tip protector to the trocar member, and a second locking member movably coupled to the housing and configured to selectively engage a distal end portion of the tubular housing to lock the tip protector to the tubular housing.

Abstract: An apparatus and methods for the delivery of biocompatible materials such as anchors. The apparatus comprises an elongated body having a proximal end and an opposing distal end, a supporting arm extending outwardly from the distal end of the body, and a plurality of arms each extending outwardly from the distal end of the body. The plurality of arms may each define an arm lumen therewithin dimensioned to receive the biocompatible material. The apparatus comprises means for selectively moving each one of the plurality of arms relative to the longitudinal axis of the supporting arm between an expanded configuration and a collapsed configuration, and means for selectively deploying the biocompatible materials from within one or more of the arm lumens into a tissue of a subject.

Abstract: A surgical instrument for treating the tissue of a patient is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises a housing including a handle, a housing frame comprising a housing connector, and a drive system comprising at least one electric motor. The surgical instrument further comprises a shaft assembly releasably assembled to the housing including a shaft frame comprising a proximal connector and a distal connector, wherein the proximal connector is releasably coupled to the housing connector and a shaft drive system comprising at least one rotatable shaft operably coupled to the electric motor. The surgical instrument further comprises an end effector releasably assembled to the shaft assembly including an end effector frame comprising an end effector connector releasably coupled to the distal connector of the shaft assembly, a plurality of staple cartridges removably stored in the end effector, and a plurality of end effector drivers operably coupled to the rotatable shaft.

Abstract: Methods and systems for administering directed fluidics during a medical procedure for removing an object are disclosed. A method includes inserting first and second medical instruments into a treatment site, providing irrigation and aspiration of the treatment site through the first and second medical instruments, determining a characteristic of one of the irrigation and the aspiration, and selecting a characteristic of the other of the irrigation and aspiration based on the determined characteristic.

Abstract: The invention relates to a polymer needle comprising a body portion with a cylindrical cross-section and a tip portion in extension to the body portion. The tip portion of the needle forms at least two converging surfaces defining an edge. The needle forms a plurality of conduits arranged about a central solid core. The conduits and the core extend from the body portion into the tip portion such that each conduit terminates in one of the tip surfaces and the solid core forms the tip.
The invention further relates to an apparatus for cleaving a polymer fibre at elevated temperatures. The polymer needle is prepared by this cleaving apparatus. The cleaving apparatus comprises a holding means for holding the fibre, a guide for guiding the movement of a cleaving knife, and a cleaving knife forming a cutting face of V-shape.-

Abstract: A method comprises identifying a target location within a patient anatomy, receiving a position for a tip portion of an interventional instrument at a first location within the patient anatomy, and determining a three-dimensional distance between the first location and the target location. The method further comprises displaying on a display system an image that includes a symbol representing the target location and a symbol representing the tip portion of the instrument and displaying on the display system a rotational assist symbol indicating a rotational orientation of the tip portion. As the tip portion is actuated, the image is displayed so that the symbol representing the tip portion is a frame of reference for the image and the symbol representing the target location moves with respect to the symbol representing the tip portion to represent a new location of the tip portion relative to the target location.

Abstract: One aspect of the invention provides a trocar including: a central cylinder defining a central channel and having a distal end adapted and configured for insertion within a subject; one or more gas outlets located within the central cylinder proximate to the distal end of the trocar; and one or more liquid outlets located within the central cylinder on a proximal side of the one or more gas outlets. The one or more liquid outlets are adapted and configured to dispense a liquid when an endoscope is withdrawn from a fully extended position within the central channel of the trocar to a position proximate to the one or more liquid outlets. Distal advancement of the endoscope to a position adjacent to the one or more gas outlets removes liquid from a distal end of the endoscope.
