摘要: A self-cleaning optical device, suitable for use in dirty process environments has a composite, multi-layered structure. A protective outer layer, exposed to the process environment, is a transparent plastic film which is resistant to the adhesion of contaminants to its surface. A light-interactive layer, either light-transmissive or light-reflective depending on the intended function of the optical device, is disposed beneath the protective plastic film layer. A semi-rigid plastic material forms a support layer to give the device structural integrity. The optical device is vibrated to shake loose collected particles from the protective plastic film. The vibrational motion is generated either externally or by excitation of piezoelectric materials incorporated into the device construction.

摘要: An alarm system responsive to a predetermined concentration of gaseous hydrocarbon in an area. A gaseous hydrocarbon responsive variable resistance element having a heater has resistance characteristics that are relatively stable upon energization of the heater beyond an initial heating period, decrease from the relatively stable value as a function of the concentration of gaseous hydrocarbons in the vicinity of the sensor, and decrease to an initial action resistance value substantially below the stable value during the initial heating period. First and second switching devices connected in series with a power source produce an audible alarm signal with both in their conductive condition. A first trigger circuit triggers the first switching device into its conductive condition in response to the variable resistance element decreasing from the relatively stable value at least to a predetermined resistance value above the initial action resistance value to indicate a predetermined concentration of gaseous hydrocarbons in the vicinity of the resistance element. A second trigger circuit includes a capacitor connected to be charged to at least a predetermined charge level upon energization of the heater and triggers the second switching device into its conductive condition in response to the capacitor achieving the predetermined charge level. A third trigger circuit is connected to the first switching device to intermittently trigger the first switching device into its conductive condition in response to the occurrence of an abnormal condition of the sensor. The alarm circuit can synthesize and annunciate a predetermined spoken message in response to a sensed alarm condition.

摘要: A subscription television system and method in which billing information regarding programs actually viewed by a subscriber of the system is accumulated over non-dedicated telephone lines. A scrambled television program signal containing a block of television program material, a program identification code unique to the block of program material, and a program category code, is broadcast. The codes are preferably included in the vertical retrace interval of the video portion of the program signal and the transmitted program signal is selectively received at a subscriber station and selectively unscrambled to permit viewing of the block of program material being transmitted in response to subscriber action indicating acceptance for viewing of the block of program material. The received program category code is compared with a locally generated category code to determine whether the program is acceptable for viewing. The program identification code is detected and stored for subsequent transmission in response to the subscriber action indicating acceptance for viewing of the received block of program material. The program identification code stored at the subscriber station is selectively accessed from a remote location over telephone lines on other than a real time basis (e.g., a periodic basis) to thereby provide billing information at the remote location as to programs actually viewed by the subscriber. The subscriber can thus be billed monthly or on some desired periodic basis for programs actually viewed during the preceding period. The billing period can be varied from the remote location to provide a means to control the number of programs which a subscriber can receive.

摘要: A telephone data accumulator system for accumulating data at a central station through connection of the central station to a remote subscriber's station, including a data accumulator, by way of nondedicated telephone lines. The remote terminal is selectively conditioned to generate dialing signals and to thereby provide selective connection of the accumulator to the telephone lines from the remote subscriber station. A preconditioning circuit such as timing means or a broadcast signal decoder at the subscriber's station conditions the remote terminal and provides a short time window during a time of the day when the telephone there is not likely to be used for normal telephone calls, and the call is made to the central station during the time window to cause connection of the data accumulator to the telephone lines. The data in the data accumulator is thereafter transferred from the remote station to the central station over the telephone lines.

摘要: A method of forming an inertial sensor provides 1) a device wafer with a two-dimensional array of inertial sensors and 2) a second wafer, and deposits an alloy of aluminum/germanium onto one or both of the wafers. The alloy is deposited and patterned to form a plurality of closed loops. The method then aligns the device wafer and the second wafer, and then positions the alloy between the wafers. Next, the method melts the alloy, and then solidifies the alloy to form a plurality of conductive hermetic seal rings about the plurality of the inertial sensors. The seal rings bond the device wafer to the second wafer. Finally, the method dices the wafers to form a plurality of individual, hermetically sealed inertial sensors.

摘要: A method and a system for measuring the velocity of a projectile. The method and system employ sensors that uses magnetoresistive sensing elements to measure the velocity of a projectile. Two magnetoresistive based sensors may be used to sense a time at which a projectile crosses a sense path associated with each of the sensors. Because the sensors employ magnetoresistive sensing elements, high quality voltage signals are produced, allowing accurate time measurements to be calculated. Accordingly, the velocity of the projectile can be determined by using these time measurements along with a measured spacing distance between the sensors.
