摘要: A transmission diffraction optical element is presented in which ridges having a roughly rectangular cross-section shape are disposed parallel to each other at a regular pitch at the surface of a substrate. Striped thin-film layers are formed on these ridges and a thin-film layer is inserted between the substrate and the ridges. The thin-film layers are arranged at a regular pitch identical to the regular pitch of the ridges and the thin-film layer does not have a periodic pattern oriented in the same direction as the periodic pattern of the ridges.

摘要: A light-receiving element may easily detect the barycenter of a light intensity of light having a long-wavelength band in an optical communication. An InGaAs layer (i-type layer) and a p-type InP layer are stacked on an n-type InP substrate. Electrodes are formed on both sides of the top surface of the p-type layer, and an electrode is formed on the bottom surface of the n-type substrate. An incident light impinged upon the light-receiving element is photoelectricly-converged into a photocurrent, and the photocurrent flows in the p-type layer to the electrodes. As a result, a current is derived from each of the electrodes, the magnitude thereof being dependent on the distances from the light impinging position to respective electrodes. The barycenter of a light intensity may be calculated from the currents derived from the electrodes and a light intensity may be obtained from the summation of the currents.

摘要: A transmission grating that provides low polarization dependent loss over a wide wave range and provides high diffraction efficiency even with a small groove pitch and high resolving power and dispersion. In a transmission grating 10, multiple parallel ridges 22 that are transparent for the wave range to be used are disposed on one side of a substrate 20 that is transparent for the wave range to be used. Parallel grooves 24 are formed at a fixed pitch a between these ridges. Light is applied from the surface of the transmission grating on which the grooves are formed and diffracted light is extracted from the substrate surface on which grooves are not formed. The groove pitch a is set to a range of 0.51 λc-1.48 λc, where λc is the central wavelength.

摘要: When an end surface of a silica optical fiber and another optical element are to be optically coupled to each other, according to the invention, the optical fiber is treated so that a core of the optical fiber is protruded from a clad of the optical fiber at an end portion of the optical fiber to form a protrusion shaped like a truncated cone or like a cone. On this occasion, the refractive index of the surrounding medium is selected to be in a range of from 1.35 to 1.60. Preferably, the area of the top surface of the truncated cone is not larger than ⅕ as large as the area of the bottom surface of the truncated cone. Further preferably, the side surface of the core protrusion is inclined at an angle of 30 degrees to 75 degrees, both inclusively, with respect to the central axis of the core.

摘要: Incident light rays (11) given from an optical fiber (10) are converted into parallel light rays (12) by a collimator lens (2). The parallel light rays (12) are demultiplexed in accordance with wavelengths by a diffraction grating (3). After the demultiplexed light rays arrive at the collimator lens (2) again, the light rays are converted into convergent light rays (14) and converged into a photo acceptance element array. Because the converging/image-forming positions of respective channels are arranged at irregular pitches in accordance with wavelengths, signals of the channels can be taken out accurately and efficiently from photo acceptance elements respectively when the photo acceptance elements are provided in the converging/image-forming positions respectively.
