A perpendicular magnetic recording disk has a granular Co-based ferromagnetic alloy recording layer (RL) with oxides of a selected metal (Ta or Nb) and a reduced-thickness exchange-break layer (EBL) between the RL and the soft magnetic underlayer (SUL). A perpendicular magnetic recording system that includes the disk, the write head and the read head, has an improved ability to write to the RL because of the reduced-thickness EBL.

The invention uses an adhesion layer of an amorphous alloy of aluminum. A first aluminum titanium embodiment of the amorphous adhesion layer preferably contains approximately equal amounts of aluminum and titanium (+/−5 at. %). A second embodiment of the amorphous adhesion layer preferably contains approximately equal amounts of aluminum and titanium (+/−5 at. %) and up to 10 at. % Zr with 5 at. % Zr being preferred. A third embodiment is aluminum tantalum preferably including from 15 to 25 at. % tantalum with 20 at. % being preferred. The most preferred compositions are Al50Ti50, Al47.5Ti47.5Zr5 or Al80 Ta20. The adhesion layer is deposited onto the substrate. The substrate can be glass or a metal such as NiP-plated AlMg. The preferred embodiment of media according to the invention is for perpendicular recording and includes a magnetically soft underlayer deposited above the adhesion layer.

A composite perpendicular magnetic recording disk has two distinct magnetic layers formed on the disk substrate, each with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, that are strongly exchange coupled perpendicularly to each other across their interface. The first layer is a CoCr granular layer formed on a growth-enhancing sublayer, such as titanium, so as to have strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The second layer is a continuous layer, preferably a continuous multilayer of Co/Pt or Co/Pd palladium formed on top of the granular layer. An interface layer, such as a layer of platinum or palladium, depending on whether the top multilayer is Co/Pt or Co/Pd, respectively, may be located between the two layers to enhance the growth of the continuous multilayer.
