摘要: A double-structure silicon on insulator (SOI) substrate with a silicon layer, an insulation film (silicon oxide film), a silicon layer, and an insulation film in this order from the side of the surface. The upper-layer insulation film is formed so as to have a uniform distribution of depth while the lower-layer insulation film is formed so as to have a non-uniform distribution of depth so that a thick portion may be formed in the silicon layer along a predetermined path. The refractive index of Si is 3.5 and the refractive index of SiO2 is 1.5. The thick portion of the silicon layer provides a core and the insulation films corresponding to this thick portion provide clads, thereby forming an optical waveguide along the predetermined path. The silicon layer at the side of the surface has a uniform thickness, thereby enabling characteristics of MOS devices fabricated on various portions of the silicon layer to be met with each other easily and facilitating a design of the electrical device as a whole.

摘要: An optical switching system is disclosed which can achieve high-speed optical switching with a simple configuration. Light from a light irradiation section is irradiated into an optical transmission line made of a material having a non-linear optical effect and disposed on the upstream side with respect to an optical switch provided for performing switching of a transmission line to cause the non-linear optical effect to occur. Thereupon, light is emitted externally from the optical transmission line by the non-linear optical effect between the light irradiated by the light irradiation section and light propagating in the optical transmission line. The light emitted is received by a light reception section to acquire intensity information of the light propagating in the optical transmission line. The intensity information is used as a driving signal for driving the optical switch.

摘要: An optical device used for converging a light beam on a signal recording surface of an optical disc includes an optical lens for converging the light beam on a signal recording surface of the optical disc and a light barrier portion provided on a surface of the optical lens facing the optical disc. The light barrier portion includes a light transmitting aperture through which is transmitted the light beam converged by the optical lens. The light beam illuminated on the optical disc has its diameter controlled by this light transmitting aperture. The light radiated by a light source so as to be incident to the optical device is converged by the optical lens. The light converged by the optical lens is transmitted through the light transmitting aperture and illuminated on the signal recording surface of the optical disc. The diameter of the light beam illuminated on the signal recording surface of the optical disc is controlled by the light transmitting aperture, and thus the numerical aperture NA of the optical device is determined.
