A wireless telephone system comprises one or more wireless handsets and a base unit. Each handset has a handset transceiver and a rechargeable handset battery for powering the handset. The base unit has a base transceiver for communicating over an RF channel with each handset via its handset transceiver; a recharge cradle for physically docking a docked handset battery comprising one of a detached handset battery and a handset; and a recharge unit for recharging the docked handset battery. The base unit is coupled to an AC power supply and utilizes the docked handset battery as a backup power supply if AC power from the AC power supply is lost or irregular to prevent communication between the base unit and the handsets from being disrupted.

A method and apparatus for responding to an incoming call on one of a plurality of external telephone lines when a conference call is in progress on that external telephone line includes the following. First, caller identification information is received relating to the incoming call. Then the plurality of handsets involved in the conference call are notified that an incoming call has been received. Should it be desired to answer that incoming telephone call via a callback, a pre-recorded message is transmitted to the caller of the incoming call requesting the caller hang up and the incoming telephone call is terminated. The caller of the incoming call is then called back on a unused external telephone line using the previously received caller identification information relating to that incoming call. Finally, one of the plurality of handsets involved in the conference call is connected to the caller of the incoming call.

A method and apparatus for combining corded and cordless telephone handsets with either analog network lines or a digital network in order to perform intercom and conferencing functions. Specifically, the apparatus comprises a network interface coupled to each analog network line or a digital network line from a digital network, an analog converter coupled to each corded telephone handset, a digital converter coupled to each cordless telephone handset, a signal processing circuit coupled to the network interface as well as the analog converter and the digital converter, and a controller coupled to the signal processing circuit as well as the network interface or interface circuit, the analog converter and the digital converter. In operation, the signal processing circuit receives signals from the network interface, the analog converter and the digital converter in a time division multiplexed manner to generate output signals that are sent to the analog converter, the digital converter and network interface and reconverted to the respective corded telephone handsets, cordless telephone handsets, and analog/digital network lines.

A multiprocessor computer system comprises a plurality of network interfaces each adapted to be coupled to respective external networks for receiving and sending data packets to and from remote devices coupled to the external networks via a particular communication protocol. The multiprocessor computer system further comprises a plurality of symmetrical processors including a control processor and at least one switching processor. The switching processor further includes at least one network application executing thereon. The control processor further includes an operating system portion having a kernel memory and at least one network driver communicating with the plurality of network interfaces. A buffer descriptor list is accessible by the network application and the network driver. The buffer descriptor list defines the status of buffers provided in the kernel memory that are used for temporary storage of data packets transferred between the network application and the plurality of network interfaces via the network driver. Data packets received by the network interfaces from the external networks directed to the network application are placed in selected ones of the buffers by the network driver for direct access by the network application. Similarly, data packets transmitted from the network application to the external networks are placed in other selected ones of the buffers for direct access by the network driver.

A data packet switching and server load balancing device is provided by a general-purpose multiprocessor computer system. The general-purpose multiprocessor computer system comprises a plurality of symmetrical processors coupled together by a common data bus, a main memory shared by the processors, and a plurality of network interfaces each adapted to be coupled to respective external networks for receiving and sending data packets via a particular communication protocol, such as Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). A first one of the processors is adapted to serve as a control processor and remaining ones of the processors are adapted to serve as data packet switching processors. The data packet switching processors are each coupled to at least one of the plurality of network interfaces. The control processor receives raw load status data from the external networks and generates load distribution configuration data therefrom. The load distribution configuration data is stored in the main memory for access by the data packet switching processors. The switching processors route received ones of the data packets to a selected one of the external networks in accordance with information included in a header portion of the data packets and the load distribution configuration data. The switching processors perform periodic polling of corresponding ones of the network interfaces to detect a received one of the data packets therein. In addition, the switching processors re-write the routing information included in the header portion of the data packets to reflect the selected one of the external networks.

A CAP signal is processed by a QAM demodulator network. The QAM network causes the CAP signal to rotate about its center frequency, which rotation is removed prior to conveying the CAP signal to utilization networks. In an analog implementation, the CAP signal is frequency upconverted to be centered at Fad/4 so that the QAM processor can use the usual 1, 0, -1, 0 demodulation sequence to bring the CAP signal to baseband. Alternatively, using digital techniques, frequency upconverting is not needed and the 1, 0, -1, 0 demodulation sequence is replaced with a Numerically Controlled Oscillator and full multiplier to allow the QAM processor the bring the CAP signal to baseband.

A system and method for broadcasting content includes a content provider which interfaces with one or more clients through a network. The content provider includes a scheduler responsive to requests for content from clients. The scheduler provides the content in blocks by making the blocks available to requesters by a plurality of streams wherein a subsequent requester accesses blocks from previous requester's streams complemented by a subset of blocks as a stream for this requester to complete an entire set of blocks for the subsequent requester. By manipulating the scheduler as a function of user requests, this system and method is able to provide a video on demand service at a fractional bandwidth usage of a conventional VOD system.
