    摘要: A planar light emitting element is capable of outputting light having high directivity in at least one direction. The planar light emitting element has a light guide plate and first and second low refractive index layers. Light incident on the light guide plate is totally reflected on the interface between the light guide plate and the second low refractive index layer, propagates in the light guide plate, and is output from the light guide plate to the first low refractive index layer through a light output opening section. When a refractive index of the first low refractive index layer is sufficiently smaller than a refractive index of the light guide plate, the light propagates in the light guide plate at a large angle with respect to a light output surface of the light guide plate. When the difference between the refractive indexes of the first and second low refractive index layers is small, a spreading angle of light output to the first low refractive index layer is small. The light having high directivity is reflected on a reflective mirror and output from the planar light emitting element.

    摘要: An object of the present invention is to implement a bright liquid crystal display device having a high contrast ratio and a wide viewing angle. A liquid crystal display device according to the present invention has: a number of data lines; gate lines formed so as to cross the number of data lines; a number of switching elements formed in locations where the number of data lines and the number of gate lines cross; a reflection area and a transmission area formed within each pixel; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between first and second substrates; a common electrode placed between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer; and a pixel electrode placed between the second substrate and the liquid crystal layer, and the common electrode has slits or protrusions, and the data lines overlap the slits in the common electrode or protrusions of the common electrode in the direction of normal to a surface of the first substrate in the configuration.

The light-condensing sheet includes a plurality of lenses each with a light-condensing function ranged on a light transmittance substrate. The light-emitting portion is opposed to the light-condensing sheet and includes light-emitting areas with respective dimensions. The control unit switches a luminous state of the light-emitting area to a non-luminous state or vice versa. A display device is provided with the illuminating device described above.

Polarization separators (500) are arranged between the emissive layer (100) and a phase plate (700). In the light of a wavelength range which includes a part or all of a light-emission wavelength range of the emissive layer and is narrower than a visible wavelength range and is directed from the emissive layer side to the polarization separators side, the polarization separators (500) reflect circularly polarized light components which are converted into linearly polarized light that is absorbed by the polarizer (600) due to the operation of the phase plate and transmit the other light.
