A tube for a heat exchanger has notch portions at a longitudinal direction end portion to be inserted into a header tank. Further, several passage holes are provided in the tube to extend in a longitudinal direction of the tube in which refrigerant flows. The notch portions are formed by cutting parts of the tube to be defined by cut surfaces. The passage holes are not provided at portions corresponding to the cut surfaces. Therefore, the passage holes are securely prevented from being crushed and cut when the notch portions are formed by cutting. As a result, joining failure between the tube and the header tank can be prevented.

A flow measuring apparatus includes a resistance layer for detecting a flow rate within a passage and an additional resistance layer for burning off deposits formed by suspended particles the like, and both of the resistance layers are formed on only one substrate. When suspended particles are deposited on the substrate to form deposits thereon, the deposits are burned off and removed from the substrate by supplying power to the additional resistance layer.

A gas composition sensor includes a gas sensor element having an electric resistance value which varies in accordance with the composition of exhaust gases to be sensed, and a pair of electrodes attached to the gas sensor element for detecting the electric resistance value, whereby the resistance value of the gas sensor element is detected to sense the composition of the exhaust gases. A layer of material substantially impervious to the gases is formed on the gas sensor element to extend between the electrodes and surround the electrodes and the layer is also formed on other portions of the electrodes exposed to the exhaust gases.

A spark plug includes a body of dielectric substance mounted on one of central and earth electrodes and having polarization effects. A gap for capacitive discharge is defined between the body of dielectric substance and the other of the electrodes, and a gap for inductive discharge is defined between the electrodes, which gap for inductive discharge is larger in dimension than the gap for capacitive discharge. With the arrangement, capacitive discharge to be produced in the early stage of discharge is caused at low discharge breakdown voltage due to polarization effects of the body of dielectric substance, and inductive discharge taking the main part of discharge for ignition is produced by utilizing the capacitive discharge of low voltage as trigger, thereby lowering discharge breakdown voltage to improve ignition performance of the spark plug.

According to one embodiment, an encoding apparatus which encodes video data in accordance with MPEG4 AVC, the encoding apparatus includes a GOVU configuration determining unit configured to determine a group of video access units configuration of the video data, such that a last one of a plurality of group of video access units contained in each of a plurality of selectable content items in the video data contains a predetermined number of pictures by adjusting the number of pictures contained in a second last group of video access units, and an encoding unit configured to encode the video data based on the group of video access units configuration determined by the GOVU configuration determining unit.
