    Abstract: It is provided a method, comprising checking if a contention based random access is to be performed for a reason different from a beam failure recovery; monitoring if a received first reference signal has a received power above a set power threshold and/or a received quality above a set quality threshold; checking if a reception device is configured to receive a downlink control signal on a first beam corresponding to the first reference signal; instructing a transmission device to transmit a preamble of the contention based random access on the first beam if the contention based random access is to be performed for the reason, the received first reference signal has the received power above the set power threshold and/or the received quality above the set quality threshold, and the reception device is configured to receive the downlink control signal on the first beam.

    Abstract: A method includes determining whether a downlink beam signal is being received from a base station (502); when the downlink beam signal is being received from the base station, determining whether a measurable property of the downlink beam signal does not meet a preselected threshold (504); when the downlink beam signal is not being received from the base station or when the measurable property of the downlink beam signal does not meet the preselected threshold, transmitting a message to the base station indicating that at least one uplink beam corresponding to the downlink beam has failed (506); and receiving a reply message from the base station with information required to determine a new uplink beam (508). An alternative method includes determining whether at least one uplink beam signal is being received from a user equipment (602); determining whether a measurable property of the at least one uplink beam signal does not meet a preselected threshold, when the at least one uplink beam signal is being received from the user equipment (604); and transmitting a message to the user equipment to initiate uplink beam recovery, when at least one uplink beam signal is not being received from the user equipment or when the measurable property of the at least one uplink beam signal does not meet the preselected threshold (606).

    Abstract: There are provided measures for enabling/realizing higher-layer beam management, e.g. beam failure detection or beam candidate detection in a higher layer such as a MAC entity. Such measures exemplarily comprise that a beam management timer is started when a (first) beam management instance indication from a lower layer is obtained, beam management is executed, wherein a beam management instance counter is incremented whenever a beam management instance indication from the lower layer is obtained and a beam management event is detected when the beam management instance counter reaches a beam management instance threshold before expiry of the beam management timer, and the beam management instance counter is reset upon expiry of the beam management timer.
