The free-radically polymerizable fluorinated polymeric intermediate comprises the reaction product of i) at least one multi-functional free-radically polymerizable material having a fluorine content of at least 25 wt-%, and ii) optionally other multi-functional free-radically polymerizable material. The total amount of multi-functional materials is preferably at least about 25 wt-%.

Articles such as optical displays and protective films, comprising a (e.g. light transmissive) substrate having a surface layer comprising the reaction product of a mixture comprising a hydrocarbon-based hardcoat composition and at least one perfluoropolyether urethane additive. The surface layer exhibits low lint attraction in combination with high contact angles. Hardcoat coating compositions comprising a perfluoropolyether urethane additive and a silicone(meth)acrylate additive are also described.

The development of new compositions and new aromatic sulfur acrylate monomers results in improved hardcoat films, and improved optical films that contain the hard coat films. The films provide improved display systems when incorporated thereon. The combination of functionalized zirconia nanoparticles with multifunctional acrylate crosslinkers and high index of refraction aromatic sulfur acrylates, about 1.58 or greater, produces abrasion resistant hard coats that have relatively high refractive indices.

Presently described are microstructured films, such as brightness enhancing films, having a microstructured surface. The microstructured surface comprises the reaction product of a polymerizable composition comprising at least 20 wt-% of inorganic nanoparticles and a non-aromatic multi-(meth)acrylate monomer comprising at least three contiguous alkylene oxide repeat units. The multi-(meth)acrylate monomer typically comprises two or three (meth)acrylate groups. The alkylene oxide repeat units have the formula —[O-L]- wherein each L is independently a C2-C6 alkylene. Also described is a polymerizable resin composition comprising at least 20 wt-% of inorganic nanoparticles having a refractive index of at least 1.68 and a non-aromatic multi-(meth)acrylate monomer comprising at least three contiguous alkylene oxide repeat units.

The cholesteric liquid crystal layer has a non-uniform pitch along a thickness direction of the layer and comprises a crosslinked polymer material that substantially fixes the cholesteric liquid crystal layer. The crosslinking hinders diffusion of cholesteric liquid crystal material within the cholesteric liquid crystal layer. In other methods of making an optical body, a reservoir of chiral material is provided during the process over a first cholesteric liquid crystal layer to diffuse into the layer and provide a non-uniform pitch. Alternatively, two coating compositions can be disposed on a substrate where the material of the first coating composition is not substantially soluble in the second coating composition.
