The invention is directed to a picture tube comprising an electron gun installed within an evacuated envelope which receives various potentials supplied from a potential source. The electron gun comprises a cathode for generating an electron beam and a plurality of successively arranged electrodes for focusing and accelerating the electron beam. One or more supporting rod secures the electrodes. Each of the supporting rods comprises an insulator portion and a glass resistance portion. The glass resistance portion acts as a solid bulk resistor and secures in direct connection with at least one electrode of the electron gun. Consequently, potentials from the potential source are applied to certain electrodes through the glass resistance body. In a further embodiment the entire supporting rod consists of a homogeneous glass resistance body.

A color picture tube comprises the vacuumed tube envelope formed by a face plate having a plurailty of phosphor strips regularly formed on the inner surface, a funnel section having an enlarged end opening on which the face plate is mounted a skirt section on which deflection yoke is mounted and neck integrally formed with the funnel section and having located therein an electron gun assembly for emitting electron beams. A shadow mask having a plurality of slits therein is disposed to face to the inner surface of the face plate. The shadow mask is provided on an integral mask frame by which the shadow mask is secured to the inner surface of the tube envelope. The mask frame has an inner shield secured thereto along the inner circumference of the envelope. The inner shield is coupled to a permanent magnet member faced to the inner surface of the envelope. The member is to be preliminarily strongly magnetized and each section thereof is demagnetized and adjusted to a determined value to present a determined intensity of magnetism. The plate serves to change the path of the electron beams, thereby appropriately directing the electron beams toward the determined phosphor strips.

The shadow mask body includes a rectangular effective portion that is formed having a large number of electron beam passage apertures. The effective portion has a major axis and a minor axis that pass through its center and extends at right angles to each other. The shadow mask comprises an auxiliary mask fixed to a region that contains the minor axis of the effective portion of the shadow mask body. The auxiliary mask is in the form of a strip that extends long in the direction of the minor axis and has a large number of electron beam passage apertures that communicate individually with the electron beam passage apertures of the effective portion.
