摘要： An apparatus and method are disclosed that can adapt off-the shelf PDA devices (90) to user input/output applications such as data entry applications and cellular phone applications. The resulting apparatus (10) may be sized and shaped to be durable and facilitate handheld operation when the user is mobile during use. The apparatus provides features required for portable data entry such as key entry, barcode scanning, radio frequency identification, and wireless local area network (LAN) as well as wide area network (WAN) communications. The apparatus may be operated (a) in a slave mode with inclusion of a PDA device (90) for use in certain input/output operations that are processor intensive as well as (b) in a stand-alone mode without inclusion of a PDA device (90) for use in certain other input/output operations that are not processor intensive.

摘要： A handheld computing device (10) having voice input and voice output includes a handheld unit (20) having a processor (11) and a display (18) communicating with the processor (11), a handset (30) including means for voice input (43) and means for voice output (42), a mechanism (39, 41) for docking the handset (30) with the handheld unit (20) forming a docked unit, the docked unit dimensioned to be held in one hand while being used for voice input and voice output, and at least one connection (23, 36) for carrying voice-representative signals between the handheld unit (20) and the handset (30). Device (10) allows telephone-style, voice-driven, user-interface communications both when handset (30) is docked with handheld unit (20), and when handset (30) is detached from handheld unit (20). Handset (30) is made lightweight so that it can be held for an extended amount of time during lengthy phone-style conversations, and may be equipped with a formed support such as a flexible loop (26) to let the user wear handset (30) on one of user's ears for hands-free use as a handset. Device (10) can also be equipped with an image scanner to serve as a digital camera or videophone.

Also included is a display for displaying selected information, a printer for printing a customer receipt, a communications assembly for furnishing the information needed to obtain transaction approval, and a processor for receiving the information, and controlling the display, the printer and the communications assembly. Device furnishes all functions necessary to facilitate and complete a point of sale credit card transaction. The housing configuration allows handsfree operation for most functions. The arrangement of components within device provides a uniform distribution of weight and makes supporting device with one hand comfortable and relatively effortless.

摘要： An electronic terminal of the type employing a card reading device mounted within the interior thereof accessible through an input port formed in a wall of the terminal. A one-piece shield formed of an elastomeric material is mounted adjacent the input port of the card reader to prevent the entrance of debris into the interior of the terminal. The shield provides at least two opposing movable flaps extending over the card reader input port. The flaps are readily flexible to allow a card to slide therebetween, and to allow the flaps to flex back into a closed shielding position once the card is withdrawn from the input port. Surrounding portions of the shield form a more rigid body for securing the shield within the input port of the electronic terminal.
