摘要： A sternum closure device for closing the sternum of a patient comprising a head portion, tail portion and flexible spine portion. The head portion includes a locking tang to prevent backward movement of the spine portion once it is received and engaged in the head portion. The spine is made of a biocompatible metal coated with a biocompatible polymer along part of its length. One end of the spine is sharpened to serve as a needle. The tang pierces the polymer and locks against a serration of the spine. A method of using the sternum closure device is also disclosed.

摘要： A drainage device has a collection chamber for receiving liquids and gases from the body of a patient, an underwater seal chamber and a one-way outflow valve. A partition extending across a portion of the device forms the underwater seal chamber, which prevents the flow of atmospheric air from the device into the pleural cavity of the patient, above the partition and the collection chamber below it. The underwater seal is created at the lower end of an extension connected to the inlet to the device by liquids drained from the patient. The one-way outflow valve communicates with a trap chamber for collecting liquids inadvertently conducted toward the valve. The trap chamber is closed off from the underwater seal chamber but is connected to the collection chamber by means of a passageway through a wall separating the trap and collection chambers.

摘要： A femoral hip prosthesis comprises a stem component generally divided into a proximal portion and a substantially longer distal portion. The stem has a slight posterior bow along its length. The proximal portion includes a slight twist of from about 5.degree. to 15.degree., the twist extending in a direction from the anterior to the posterior face of the stem through the medial face thereof. The characteristics of the stem provide a glove fit when inserted into a prepared intermedullary canal in the femur.

摘要： A tension meter for measuring the degree of tension between bones has a grip portion, a tension meter body mounted to the grip portion, and a torque setting device rotatably connected through a torque shaft to the tension meter body. The tension meter body includes a body portion, a fixed arm extending from one end of the body portion, and a movable arm mounted on the body portion so as to be movable away therefrom. The movable arm is located in opposed relationship to the fixed arm. The movable arm is provided with a gear portion meshing the torque shaft. The torque setting device is provided with a torque limiter for limiting relative displacement of the movable arm in relation to the fixed arm according to a force to be applied between the fixed arm and the movable arm. Use of the tension meter produces quantitative data which makes it possible to carry out surgical operations with reproducible results because they do not rely only upon the surgeon's senses.

摘要： Fracture reduction tool is disclosed for use with a guide wire for reducing a bone fracture. The guide wire is of a uniform diameter and has a beaded end for placement into the medullary canal. The tool includes an elongated hollow shaft which can be passed into the medullary canal of the fractured bone through an entry hole prepared in the bone. The shaft has a bore along its length through which the guide wire can selectively pass. The shaft and/or the guide wire can be manipulated into and within the respective medullary canal portions of the fractured bone by translational and/or rotational movements so as to reduce the fracture. The tool also includes a measurement sleeve which moves over the shaft and provides a determination of the length of a nail to be inserted into the medullary canal of the reduced bone. A handle for the proximal end of the shaft allows for ease in manipulation of the shaft and guide wire. Locking mechanisms to secure the measurement sleeve and guide wire in position relative to the shaft are also provided.A method of operation with the fracture reduction tool of the present invention is also disclosed.
