A spark plug RFI suppression arrangement comprises a spark plug having a proximal end at which an ignition terminal is located and a distal end at which a pair of electrodes are separated by a spark gap. The spark plug further has an insulator portion and a conductive case located intermediate the proximal and distal ends. The arrangement further has an ignition wire having an end portion carrying a connector removably attached to the ignition terminal of the spark plug. A spark plug boot is located at the end portion of the ignition wire, the boot being configured to cover the connector and at least a portion of the spark plug. A radio frequency interference (RFI) suppression sleeve is connected to the spark plug boot and is in electrical communication with the conductive case of the spark plug such that interference produced by operation of the spark plug is suppressed by grounding through the conductive case.

A switching element switches an induced current, which is generated via the rotation of a permanent magnet, of a primary coil on and off. A resistor and a microcomputer are connected to the switching element, and a rotation detection circuit is connected to the microcomputer. The microcomputer drives the switching element so as to rapidly change the current flowing through the primary coil and generate a high voltage in the secondary coil, and generate a spark discharge in a spark plug connected to the secondary coil. In the coil part, one coil is divided by an intermediate tap, forming the primary coil and a charging coil.

A magnetically permeable core has first and second ends located adjacent to the rim at circumferentially spaced points. At least two wire coils are wrapped on the core. The rim defines a permeability path between the ends of the core. A fixed magnet is placed on one end of the core. The rim is interrupted at circumferentially spaced points to provide walls and windows alternately making and breaking the permeability path when the rotor is rotated to produce voltage pulses in sinusoidal form in the coils. The positive half cycles in one of the coils is used to charge an ignition storage capacitor for energizing a spark plug. The negative half cycles in the other winding are used to charge a battery.

An improved capacitive discharge ignition system utilizes a permanent magnet assembly revolving in synchronism with operation of an internal combustion engine to generate spark energy. The relatively high voltage necessary to initiate an ignition spark is produced by application of a capacitive discharge voltage to the primary coil of a step-up transformer. The ignition spark is initiated in timed relationship when a voltage otherwise induced on the secondary coil of the step-up transformer by revolution of the magnet assembly exceeds a characteristic spark sustaining potential. Longer spark duration at lower engine speeds is provided by configuring the discharge circuit such that no more than a negligible current flows in the charge coil during the time in which the sustaining potential is being utilized to maintain the spark. In some exemplary constructions, the discharge voltage may be triggered by a voltage divider network electrically connected across the primary coil.

The invention has for its object to solve the problem associated with the use of a flywheel magneto for supplying ignition power to multiple cylinder combustion engines. The flywheel magneto according to the invention is composed of a flywheel (1) supporting magnets arranged in groups (2, 3, 4, 5-6, 7, 8, 9). The magneto flywheel (1) coacts with a multi-leg (11-20) core (10) of magnetically conducting material, the spacing or pitch of the core legs being such that the number of legs form an integer whereas half this number has to form an odd number. Within each group the magnets (2-9) are spaced in agreement with said core pitch. Said groups (2, 3, 4, 5-6, 7, 8, 9) are separated two pitches. Two adjacent core legs (11, 12) are provided with like windings (21, 22) the outputs ends (23, 24, 25) of the windings being connected to a discriminator circuit which distributes, in dependence of series of voltage polarities, trigger pulses (37, (37, 38) to ignition circuits (39, 40) for the respective engine cylinder (41, 42). The remaining core legs can accommodate, for example, generator windings (26).

The core is of integral, laminar construction and includes hub and counterweight portions and a pair of radially extending, circumferentially spaced arm portions. At their outer ends, the arm portions terminate in pole shoes with opposed, undercut edges to retain the discrete permanent magnet therebetween. Each of the arm portions has a laterally extending shoulder portion and, at their inner ends, connect to the hub by narrow neck or stem portions which are resiliently flexible. From the center of rotation of the rotor, the stem portions are each disposed along a given radius. Each of the arm portions of the core is characterized by a configuration and distribution of mass so that its center of gravity is located outward of the given radius whereby centrifugal force generated by high speed rotation of the rotor exerts opposing, inwardly directed forces on the arm portions for clamping the magnet therebetween.
