Process is provided for producing ethylene by the oxidative dehydrogenation ethane wherein a gas containing ethane is passed to a first elongated reaction zone, and a gas mixture containing oxygen and chlorine is passed into a second elongated gas zone positioned along said first gas zone, said first and second gas zones being separated by a porous member. The pressure of gases within the second gas zone is maintained in excess of the pressure in the first gas zone for diffusion of the chlorine and oxygen through the porous member into the first gas zone. The first gas zone is maintained under conditions sufficient to effect reaction therein of at least a portion of diffused oxygen and chlorine with ethane for production of ethylene. The reaction product containing the desired ethylene is discharged from the first gas zone.

PROPANE, HYDROGEN CHLORIDE AND A MOLTEN MIXTURE OF COPPER CHLORIDES AND COPPER OCYCHLORIDE ARE PASSED COCURRENTLY THROUGH A PROPYLENE PRODUCTION REACTOR, WITH PROPYL CHLORIDE BEING INTRODUCED AT AN INTERMEDIATE PORTION OF THE REACTOR. A REACTION EFFLUENT IS RECOVERED, INCLUDING PROPYLENE, HYDROGEN CLLORIDE PROPYL CHLORIDE AND UNREACTED PROPANE, WITH THE HYDROGEN CHLORIDE, PROPYL CHLORIDE, AND UNREACTED PROPANE BEING RECYCLED TO THE PROPYLENE PRODUCTION REACTOR. MELT FORM THE PROPYLENE PRODUCTION REACTOR IS OXIDIZED AND RECYCLED TO THE PROPYLENE PRODUCTION REACTOR. THE QUANTITIES OF CUPRIC CHLORIDE AND COPPER OXYCHLORIDE ARE CONTROLLED TO PROVIDE HIGH PROPYLENE SELECTIVITY.

A process for the recovery of iodine from the products of iodative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons containing iodine and hydrogen iodide which consists in processing said products of dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate or a mixture thereof until a weakly alkaline solution of iodine salts (pH 8 -10), containing iodide and iodate, is obtained. Said solution of iodine salts is electrolyzed to separately obtain the solutions of iodine and alkali, which contain undecomposed salts of iodine as well. The solution of alkali is recycled to the stage for alkali treatment of dehydrogenation products. Iodine is blown off from its solution by oxygen, an oxygen-containing gas or a mixture thereof with steam and recycled to the stage of dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons, and the solution of iodine salts free of iodine is recycled to the stage for alkali treatment of dehydrogenation products. The process is continuous. It enables complete recovery of iodine (up to 99.7 -99.9 percent), makes it possible to eliminate the formation of waste and crystalline iodine during the process as well as corrosive medium and dangerously explosive compounds.
