Reported CSI may not reflect non-cancelable CRS interference received from an interfering cell, such as when the CSI is computed when CRS interference is not received. To address the issue, a user equipment (UE) may determine an interference cancelation/suppression efficiency (CSE) associated with canceling/suppressing interference from interfering cells. In addition, based on the determined CSE, a UE may compute CSI such that the CSI reflects the true cancelation efficiency of the UE with respect to interfering cell signals. When computing the CSI based on the determined CSE, the UE may report that the CSI is worse than it is to reflect the UE's true cancelation efficiency with respect to the interfering cell signals.

Techniques for performing cell detection with successive detection and cancellation (SDC) are described. For SDC, pilots from stronger cells may be canceled from a received signal at a user equipment (UE) so that weaker cells may be detected as a result of reduced interference from the stronger cells. In one design, a UE processes a received signal to detect for a cell and determines whether the detected cell is sufficiently strong. If the cell is sufficiently strong, then the UE cancels the interference due to the detected cell from the received signal and further processes an interference-canceled signal to detect for another cell. The UE may detect for cells in a set of cells in a sequential order, from the strongest cell to the weakest cell. The UE may terminate detection when a cell not sufficiently strong is detected or when all cells in the set are detected.

A method of channel cancellation for a cellular communication device comprises receiving a signal comprising desired symbols and interfering symbols; regenerating a symbol sequence of interfering symbols expected to be received; determining, prior to any complete decoding of the interfering symbols by the cellular communication device, whether received interfering symbols agree with the regenerated interfering symbols, and then if the received interfering symbols are determined to agree with regenerated interfering symbols, subtracting the regenerated symbol sequence from the received signal to form an adapted signal, or if the received interfering symbols are determined not to agree with regenerated interfering symbols, omitting at least the regenerated interfering symbols not agreeing with the received interfering symbols from the subtracting of the regenerated symbol sequence from the received signal when forming the adapted signal; and then decoding the desired symbols from the adapted signal.

Techniques for improving the capacity of a wireless communications system using interference cancellation (IC). In an early decoding and IC aspect, a frame transmitted from a user to a base station may be decoded prior to the entire frame being received by the base station. The remaining portion of the frame may then be re-constructed at the base station prior to its reception, and cancelled from the receive signal to reduce the interference to frames received from other users. In a power control aspect for early decoding and IC, the power control target level at a local base station may be adjusted in response to successfully early decoding a frame, without affecting the overall outer loop power control operation. Further aspects include late decoding techniques for utilizing the IC of other users' signals to improve the probability of decoding a given user's frames, as well as techniques for traffic channel demodulation using channel re-estimation.

A spread spectrum signal demodulator receives a received signal including a plurality of spread spectrum signals, and comprises at least one signal strength suppressing means, which reduces a correlation signal outputted from a first correlation detecting means or replica signals until the correlation signal has been traveled through a replica signal generating means, a replica signal subtracting means and a second correlation detecting means. According to the invention, it is possible to improve interference cancellation capacity with a computational effort substantially comparable to that in a prior art replica signal cancellation system and improve interference cancellation performance with increasing number of interference cancellers irrespective of the magnitude of the correlation. With a sufficient number of interference cancellers provided, it is possible to obtain the same effect as obtainable with prior art decorrelation in a real time processing irrespective of the correlation magnitude.
