Free-flowing spherules of sodium bicarbonate are prepared from a sodium carbonate or from salt brine, substantially saturated with ammonia, by carbonating the sodium carbonate solution, or the ammonia-saturated brine with carbon dioxide in the presence of from 200 to 2500 parts per million of a water soluble alkaline phosphate. Spherules of sodium bicarbonate crystallizing from the solutions are separated as a product having a bulk density between about 32 to 48 pounds per cubic foot, and a screen size substantially between 14 and 100 mesh. Sodium carbonate spherules are also readily obtained by calcining the sodium bicarbonate spherules.

A method of producing sodium chromate from chromite ore, which involves mixing the ore with sodium carbonate and a refractory diluent, pelleting the mixture using an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium aluminate, sodium silicate, sodium chromate, or mixtures thereof; drying and roasting the pellets under oxidizing conditions, then disintegrating and extracting the pellets to obtain an aqueous solution of sodium chromate. The use of these solutions as pelleting liquids provides pellets of sufficient strength to withstand handling and roasting in a rotary kiln.

This invention is an automatic sampler and method to remove samples of staple fiber flowing through a transfer line comprising a yarn sample container connected to the transfer line. The container has supported internally a yarn catching means such as a hook which is thrust into the transfer line where it catches a small wad of flowing staple and then returned into the sample container where the wad of staple drops off by gravity into the container. The container has a door or other means to remove the sample fiber.
