A method and electronic device for improved filtering of mobile communications device physical layer measurement ratios to reduce the variance of reported measurements. First and second signal powers of a cell in a mobile communications network are measured and a filter having a network determined filter coefficient is applied to the first signal power. A signal quality value is determined from the filtered first signal power and the second signal power. A second filter with a network determined filter coefficient may be applied to the second signal power. An example signal quality value comprises a reference signal received quality (RSRQ) comprised of the ratio of reference signal received power (RSRP), multiplied by the number (N) of resource blocks of a carrier received signal strength indicator (RSSI), to the carrier RSSI.

In one embodiment, a method of operating a radio access node is provided. The method comprises determining whether support from a secondary cell is required for a wireless device to communicate with the radio access node, and, in response to determining that support from the secondary cell is required, calculating a modified channel condition outer-loop value for the secondary cell; and using the modified channel condition outer-loop value in an initial activation decision step for the secondary cell. The initial activation decision step may comprise activating the secondary cell in response to determining that the sum of a device reported channel condition value and the modified channel condition outer-loop value is above an activation threshold. Corresponding devices, computer programs and radio access nodes adapted to carry out the methods provided are also disclosed.

The present disclosure provides radio station list management in a wireless receiver. Upon detection of a scan event, a plurality of radio broadcast channels is scanned to detect available radio stations. Available radio stations that fail to meet a preference criterion are identified and removed to form a list of preferred radio stations. The scan event may be generated dependent upon a time, a location of the wireless receiver, or a broadcast signal quality. Preference criteria may include station content classification and signal quality.

An apparatus, and an associated method, facilitates user understanding of the audio component of media that is played back at a device having media player functionality. Responsive to detection of user selection, a portion of the audio component of the media is converted into textual, or other, form to provide a converted-form representation of the audio component portion. The representation is displayed to the user. The representation is further translatable into a second language, and the translated, representation is displayed to the user.
Abstract:
Systems and methods can be implemented on a wireless device and base stations to facilitate uplink synchronization. The wireless device can transmit a random access preamble to at least one base station serving the wireless device to initiate a random access procedure. The wireless device can identify a signal propagation time associated with the position of the wireless device and the position of the at least one base station serving the wireless device. The wireless device can also identify a positive time advance based on the identified signal propagation time for transmitting the random access preamble. Further, the wireless device can transmit the random access preamble to the at least one base station based on the identified time advance for random access.

Described herein are methods and devices for use in telecommunication cell selection and re-selection for which there may be multiple different sizes of transmission bandwidth configurations in a telecommunications operating band. For each of a plurality of channel hypotheses, in which each channel hypothesis has a hypothetical occupied portion and a hypothetical guard band portion, a respective metric is calculated based on a power value for the hypothetical occupied portion and a power value for the hypothetical guard band portion. Based on the metrics determined for the plurality of channel hypotheses, at least one channel hypothesis is selected for further processing for cell selection or re-selection. The metric is calculated by determining a difference between the power value for the hypothetical occupied portion and the power value for the hypothetical guard band portion.

Methods and systems at a user equipment, low power access node and first access node operating in a wireless network having a plurality of access nodes comprising a first access node and at least one low power access node having lower transmit power than the first access node, wherein the user equipment receives stronger downlink signals from the first access node than from the at least one low power access node, the method at the user equipment determining, by the user equipment, whether a low power access node is better for uplink data transmission than the first access node; and if the low power access node is better for uplink data transmission, sending from the user equipment to the low power access node, a random access preamble directed to the first access node.

Systems and methods can be implemented on a base station and one or more mobile devices to use dynamic cyclic prefix mode for uplink radio resource management. A base station may receive an uplink signal from each of a plurality of mobile devices. The base station can then estimate, based on the received uplink signal, a channel characteristic of the uplink channel for each of the plurality of mobile devices, and determine, based on comparing the estimated channel characteristic to a characteristic threshold, a cyclic prefix mode for each of the plurality of mobile devices.

A method for reducing energy consumption of mobile devices using a phase-continuous early paging indicator (EPI) is provided. For each of at least one paging occasion either A) an EPI indicative that a page is present in the paging occasion is transmitted during an EPI occasion in advance of the paging occasion, the EPI comprising at least one phase-continuous tone for the EPI occasion, and a page is transmitted during the paging occasion, or B) an EPI indicative that a page is not present in the paging occasion is transmitted during an EPI occasion in advance of the paging occasion, the EPI comprising at least one phase-continuous tone for the EPI occasion. A mobile device is configured to monitor for an EPI that comprises at least one phase-continuous tone for an EPI occasion in advance of its paging occasion in order to determine if a page is potentially present.

A method for channel estimation includes receiving data at a number of frequency intervals in a frequency band over a number of first time intervals. A first set of channel estimates is determined for each pilot symbol within the data over a second time interval comprising at least one first time interval, and time-direction interpolation is performed to determine a second set of channel estimates for a number of data portions in a frequency interval using the first set of channel estimates. The frequency interval comprises a data portion comprising a pilot symbol. Frequency-direction interpolation is performed to determine a third set of channel estimates for each first time interval. The time-direction interpolation and the frequency-direction interpolation can be performed in reverse order with the channel estimates generated by the frequency-direction interpolation being used as inputs for time-direction interpolation.
