Abstract:
A magnetic implant system includes an implantable device having a rotatable magnet therein; and a magnetic maintenance device comprising a base and a permanent magnet disposed on the base, the magnetic maintenance device configured to be placed on an external surface of a subject containing the implantable device. The magnetic maintenance device maintains the circumferential orientation of the implanted rotatable magnet despite bending and twisting forces being applied during physiological movement.
Abstract:
A system includes an adjustable implant configured for implantation internally within a subject, the adjustable implant having a permanent magnet configured for rotation about an axis of rotation, the permanent magnet operatively coupled to a drive transmission configured to alter a dimension of the adjustable implant. The system further includes an external adjustment device configured for placement on or adjacent to the skin of the subject comprising at least one magnet configured for rotation, the external adjustment device further comprising a motor configured to rotate the at least one magnet, whereby rotation of the at least one magnet of the external adjustment device effectuates rotational movement of the permanent magnet of the adjustable implant and alters the dimension of the adjustable implant. The system includes drive control circuitry configured to drive the motor of the external adjustment device to achieve a target dimension of the adjustable implant.
Abstract:
A spinal distraction system includes a distraction rod having a first end and a second end, the first end being configured for affixation to a subject's spine at a first location, the distraction rod having a second end containing a recess having a threaded portion disposed therein. The system further includes an adjustable portion configured for affixation relative to the subject's spine at a second location remote from the first location, the adjustable portion comprising a housing containing a magnetic assembly, the magnetic assembly affixed at one end thereof to a lead screw, the lead screw operatively coupled to the threaded portion. A locking pin may secure the lead screw to the magnetic assembly. An o-ring gland disposed on the end of the housing may form a dynamic seal with the distraction rod.
Abstract:
A spinal distraction system includes an adjustable spinal distraction rod having first and second members, the adjustable spinal distraction rod configured for non-invasive elongation of the first and second members. The system includes an anchor rod configured for mounting to a bone of a subject, and a socket coupled to the anchor rod, the socket having a lumen dimensioned to receive an end of a first member, wherein the end of the first member is configured for telescopic sliding movement within the lumen of the socket and wherein the second member is configured for mounting to a second bone of a subject.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for quantifying the amount or rate of magnetically susceptible fluid within a gastric lumen are described. In one aspect, a magnetic sensor located external to the patient is configured to detect a quantity of fluid disposed within the gastric lumen. The quantity of fluid may include fluid that is contained upstream with respect to a restriction formed in the gastric lumen (e.g., by a gastric restriction device). The quantity of fluid disposed within the gastric lumen is determined by the magnetic sensor. This quantity may be evaluated over time to then calculate a real time flow rate which can then be displayed to the physician. The methods and devices allow a physician or other trained person to dynamically view real time development of fluid flow within a restricted gastric lumen and may be used in conjunction with adjustments to the gastric restriction device to achieve target or desired flow rates.
