An electric power steering apparatus for supplying a steering assist torque from an electric motor to a steering mechanism including a torque limiter which comprises a case made of a magnetic material and secured to an output shaft of the electric motor, a boss made of a magnetic material concentrically rotatably arranged relative to the case and connected to a driven shaft, and a permanent magnet member disposed between the case and the boss for magnetically connecting therebetween. The permanent magnet member is annular and has an axially anisotropic magnetization of a negative temperature coefficient of residual magnetic flux density. The apparatus comprises a layer of an abrasion-resistant material provided between the permanent magnet member and at least one of the case and the boss and a cover for covering the outside of the case and the boss. At least one of the case and the boss comprises a guide portion for guiding and supporting at least one of an outer circumference surface and an inner circumference surface of the permanent magnet member that is annular as well as a seal portion for sealing at least one of the outer circumferential surface and the inner circumferential surface of the other of the case and the boss against the entry of any foreign matter.

A starter motor for an engine which does not readily admit water into a casing thereof and which allows water to be discharged promptly from the housing. The starter motor comprises a seal member for closing a gap between an outer periphery of a pinion moving member on an output rotary shaft or of an overrunning clutch and the casing, and the casing has two communicating holes formed therein for the communication with the atmospheric air outside the casing. One of the communicating holes is formed at a lower portion of the casing so that water may be discharged outwardly from within the casing therethrough. The other communicating hole is formed at a higher location of the casing and may be a communicating groove formed in an end face of a front bracket of the casing along which the front bracket is coupled to a yoke of an electric motor which is mounted in the casing and operatively coupled to the pinion moving member by way of the overrunning clutch.

An engine starter includes a motor having a tubular armature rotation shaft, and a rotation output shaft arranged on one axial end side of the motor coaxially therewith to be axially slidably supported. A clutch mechanism is included for transmitting torque from the armature rotation shaft to a rotation output shaft and an electromagnetic switch which has a shifting member to push the aforementioned rotation output shaft by an electromagnetic force in the axial direction to slidably move it. The switch also brings movable contacts in touch with fixed contacts to supply power to the aforementioned motor. A rear part of the rotation output shaft and the front part of the shifting member are inserted into the armature rotation shaft tube from opposite directions. The shifting member of the electromagnetic switch, the armature rotation shaft and the rotation output shaft are all coaxially arranged to reduce the length of the starter. The coaxial arrangement is highly effective in preventing invasion of dust into the contact chamber of the electromagnetic switch. To ensure a compact size for the starter a compact spring is provided for restoring the rotation shaft to a rest position after the engine has started.

A pinion shifting mechanism of an automotive engine starter is disclosed in which the pivot support 5c of the shift lever 5 on which it turns is supported at its rear side by a resilient support means 32 instead of a rigid support surface. The shift lever operatively coupling the plunger 7 of the electromagnetic switch 4 with the pinion assembly is coupled to the plunger via an engager member 15 slidably disposed in the cylindrical bore formed in the plunger. The engager member is urged backward with respect to the plunger by a helical spring 17 disposed around the engager within the bore of the plunger. When the plunger is attracted from the initial front position toward the stationary core 8 of the electromagnetic switch, the resilient support means yields first to allow a backward translation of the pivot support of the shift lever; the spring urging the engager yields only afterwards. In another aspect, the rear as well as the front side of the pivot support of the shift lever is supported by a rigid support surface; however, the two support surfaces are disposed in such a manner that a gap 51 is formed between the rear side of the pivot support of the shift lever and the forward directed support surface 23 when the plunger is at the front position.

A coaxial type starter used to start an engine of a vehicle is disclosed. The starter includes a d.c. motor having a hollow armature rotary shaft incorporating an overrunning clutch, an epicyclic reduction gear having a carrier for supporting a plurality of planet gears which revolve while in engagement with a sun gear formed on a tubular clutch inner member received and supported inside the armature rotary shaft, and an output rotary shaft extending through a tubular member which is formed integral with the carrier, the tubular member being in spline-engagement with the output rotary shaft. Thus, it is possible to reduce the overall length of the starter by a large margin.
