Abstract:
The present invention provides circuitry for maintaining the desired phase noise across the tuning range of a frequency synthesizer by compensating the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) bias current according to various tuning parameters available within the frequency synthesizer, thereby reducing overall current drain and inductor quality factor requirements. In general, the present invention includes a VCO bias circuit capable of controlling the VCO bias current in response to a control signal provided by additional circuitry based on the operating frequency of the frequency synthesizer. Further, the VCO bias current changes in response to changing the operating frequency of the frequency synthesizer.
Abstract:
The invention is a seal system for a coaxial cable more specifically an internal seal system placed within the coaxial cable and its constituent components. A series of seal stacks including flexible rigid rings and elastomeric rings are placed on load bearing members within the coaxial cable. The current invention is adapted to seal the annular space between the coaxial cable and an electrical contact passing there through. The coaxial cable is disposed within drilling components to transmit electrical signals between drilling components within a drill string. During oil and gas exploration, a drill string can see a range of pressures and temperatures thus resulting in multiple combinations of temperature and pressure and increasing the difficulty of creating a robust seal for all combinations. The seal system can be used in a plurality of downhole components, such as sections of pipe in a drill string, drill collars, heavy weight drill pipe, and jars.
Abstract:
High pressure presses for making diamonds and other hard, crystalline materials. The high pressure presses may contain varying numbers of moveable press members: e.g., a tetrahedral press will have four press members while a cubic press will have six press members. The high pressure presses are equipped with at least one hydraulic ram to provide forward and reverse thrusting force. The movable press members are positioned to move along a rectilinear path and converge at a common point. The ram thrusting force is distributed to every press member and the movable press members are guided to move in a simultaneous and synchronous manner by interconnected guide plates and slidable guide rods which comprise a guide system. The guide system allows for the elimination of one or more hydraulic rams such that the total number of hydraulic rams normally connected to each of the moveable press members will be less than the number of press members. The resulting high pressure press is therefore smaller, less expensive, and easier to maintain compared to high pressure presses known in the art that include a hydraulic ram directly connected to each moveable press member.
Abstract:
Scratch-free polished diamond is obtained by rubbing a surface of the diamond to be polished against a smooth complementary diamond surface with sufficient pressure and velocity to heat the surface being polished above the spontaneous thermal degradation temperature of the diamond. Such a method can be used to burnish diamond-on-diamond bearings in as little as ten minutes as compared with up to three weeks by prior polishing techniques. Excessive thermal degradation of the diamond is avoided by cooling the surface being polished, preferably by cooling intermittently. The same techniques are usable for other superhard material such as cubic boron nitride.
Abstract:
A toilet torso belt with sensors is disclosed. The torso belt is used by a toilet user while the toilet user is using the toilet to take health measurement readings of the user. Dynamic heart stress readings may be obtained and monitored over weeks, months and years. Rolling averages of heart function and heart health may be determined and deviations from the rolling averages may trigger notifications. Other health related measurements and functions such as temperature, respirations, heart rate, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, and stethoscope sounds are also recorded and stored for trending and data analysis. An adjustable tensioner compresses the torso belt against the user's torso with a sufficient force based on the user's height, weight, sex, and age, and whether the sensors are against the user's skin or clothing, to allow the sensors to take measurements of the user.
Abstract:
In one aspect of the present invention a method of determining a distance to a ferrous material comprises providing a plurality of magnetometers spaced at varying distances from a ferrous material, detecting a ferrous material with each of the plurality of magnetometers individually, establishing one of the plurality of magnetometers as a primary magnetometer, obtaining sensor readings from each of the plurality of magnetometers, forming a first ratio of the differences in the sensory readings of the primary magnetometer to the sensory readings of the other magnetometers, forming a second ratio of the differences in inversely cubed distances to the ferrous material from the primary magnetometer to inversely cubed distances to the ferrous material from the other magnetometers, setting the first ratio and the second ratio equal to each other, and calculating the distance to the ferrous material from the plurality of magnetometers.
Abstract:
A downhole receiver for gathering seismic and sonic data from inside a borehole includes a substantially tubular housing adapted for axial connection to a tool string, and one or more sensors. A damping element is provided to flexibly couple each sensor to the tubular housing. An actuator extends the one or more sensors substantially radially with respect to the tubular housing to clamp the sensors against the wall of the borehole. In selected embodiments, the sensors may be one or multiple component geophones, accelerometers, hydrophones, vibrometers, or the like.
Abstract:
An inductive coupler for downhole components. The inductive coupler includes an annular housing having a recess defined by a bottom portion and two opposing side wall portions. At least one side wall portion includes a lip extending toward but not reaching the other side wall portion. A plurality of generally U-shaped MCEI segments, preferably comprised of ferrite, are disposed in the recess and aligned so as to form a circular trough. The coupler further includes a conductor disposed within the circular trough and a polymer filling spaces between the segments, the annular housing and the conductor.
Abstract:
A robust transmission element for transmitting information between downhole tools, such as sections of drill pipe, in the presence of hostile environmental conditions, such as heat, dirt, rocks, mud, fluids, lubricants, and the like. The transmission element maintains reliable connectivity between transmission elements, thereby providing an uninterrupted flow of information between drill string components. A transmission element is mounted within a recess proximate a mating surface of a downhole drilling component, such as a section of drill pipe. To close gaps present between transmission elements, transmission elements may be biased with a “spring force,” urging them closer together.
