摘要: Microwave catheter apparatuses, systems, and methods for achieving renal neuromodulation by intravascular access are disclosed herein. One aspect of the present application, for example, is directed to apparatuses, systems, and methods that incorporate a catheter treatment device comprising an elongated shaft. The elongated shaft is sized and configured to deliver a microwave transmission element to a renal artery via an intravascular path. Renal neuromodulation may be achieved via dielectric heating in the presence of microwave irradiation that modulates neural fibers that contribute to renal function or alters vascular structures that feed or perfuse the neural fibers.

摘要: An intracranial pressure device for measuring CSF pressure in a skull includes a housing located between the scalp and the skull containing pressure device circuitry and a conduit extending downwardly from the housing to the vicinity of the CSF. A pressure sensor is coupled to the conduit and located in communication with the CSF wherein the pressure sensor directly senses the pressure of the CSF and provides a signal representative of the pressure of the CSF to the pressure device circuitry by way of the conduit. The skull has a dura and the conduit extends by way of an opening through the skull and an opening through the dura to position the sensor in direct contact with the CSF. A fluid reservoir can be in communication with the CSF by way of a tube and by way of the housing. The fluid reservoir contains CSF.

摘要: A photodynamic therapy method administers, to a patient to be treated, a photosensitive medication which fluoresces when illuminated. The fluorescent light is an indication of the instantaneous phototherapy dose. A catheter according to the invention includes a probe or sensor arrangement for generating a signal representing the instantaneous amplitude of the fluorescence or the incident illumination. The signal is integrated to produce a signal representing the total dose of phototherapy. The photodynamic therapy is terminated when the integrated signal indicates a particular value. The catheter in one embodiment includes an array of semiconductor light sources near its distal end, energized from the proximal end. In another embodiment, the light source is external to the patient, and the light is conducted to the distal end of the catheter by one or more optical fibers. The light sensor may be an optical fiber extending from the proximal to the distal end of the catheter, with a probe end which is directive or omnidirectional. In this case, the dose signal is detected by a photodiode exterior to the catheter and the detected signal is integrated to generate a signal indicative of cumulative dose. In another embodiment, the photodiode is located near the distal end of the catheter.

摘要: A tuning circuit, as for a television receiver or video recorder, employs switchable tuning circuits including micro-electronic electro-mechanical switches for selecting the ones of an array of capacitors and/or inductors as is useful in tunable circuits. The array of capacitors and/or inductors and micro-electro-mechanical switches of the switched tuning matrix is formed on an integrated circuit or an electronic circuit substrate along with amplifiers and other electronic elements of the tuning circuit for which the switched tuning matrix is employed. The switchable capacitance and inductance matrices are well suited for use in the resonators employed in the pre-selector filters, post-selector filters and oscillators of electronic tuners, such as those employed in television receivers and video recorders. The capacitors and micro-electro-mechanical switches may be connected to select a particular capacitor of the array of capacitors or to select ones of the capacitors of the array of capacitors to establish a particular capacitance value. The capacitors of the array of capacitors may be of like value or may be of different values, such as would advance simplified response to a digital control word, such as a 1-2-4-8 weighting or a 1-2-2-4 weighting. Similarly, the inductors and micro-electro-mechanical switches may be connected to select a particular inductor of the array of inductors or to select ones of the inductors of the array of inductors to establish a particular inductance value. The inductors of the array of inductors may be of like value or may be of different values, such as would advance simplified response to a digital control word, such as a 1-2-4-8 weighting or a 1-2-2-4 weighting.

A portable energy source such as batteries (318) or a fuel cell (360) powers the array of light sources. A method according to the invention vests the infant in the garment, and energizes the light sources by coupling a battery to the light sources, or fueling and starting the fuel cell. The therapy is continued for as long as desired or needed.

摘要: The catheter sensing and ablation arrangement allows location and cardiac abalation on a patient. The arrangement includes an electrically nonconductive catheter body, with a guide-wire lumen. The guidewire is electrically conductive, and, when the guidewire is assembled with the catheter, extends through the lumen, and is slideable therein. The guidewire has an enlarged distal end which, when retracted, blocks the guidewire lumen. The distal end of the catheter body has an exposed first electrode, which is connected to a terminal located near the proximal end. An action potential sensor is adapted for, in a sensing mode of operation, coupling to the proximal end of the guide wire and to the electrical terminal, for sensing action potentials appearing between the enlarged end of the guide wire and the first electrode, so the end of the guide wire may be moved to a cardiac location identifiable by the action potentials. An electrically conductive contact plate is adapted for, in a second mode of operation of the sensing and ablation arrangement, being located on the exterior of the patient's back. An RF signal generator is provided for, in an ablation mode of operation, causing RF energy to be guided to the selected cardiac location, for causing current flow between the contact plate and the enlarged distal end of the guidewire, resulting in ablation of cardiac material at the cardiac location, but not at the contact plate.

摘要: Dental or endodontic instruments such as drills, files, rasps, broaches, reamers, and the like are arranged to allow radiation of electromagnetic energy into a man-made or natural cavity in the tooth under treatment. The energy may be in the form of microwave or radio-frequency (RF) radiation. The energy raises the temperature of the surrounding tooth material, which tends to disinfect the material as a direct consequence of the temperature. Also, if a disinfectant material is additionally introduced into the tooth cavity, the temperature of the disinfectant material itself may be raised, which enhances its activity. In the particular application to the removal of degenerated pulp, the instrument may be introduced, and electrical or electromagnetic power applied to coagulate the pulp about the instrument, allowing more complete removal of the pulp. The dental instrument may be used with an RF energy delivery system for application of particular amounts of energy per unit time (power). The RF power may be carried through miniature coaxial cables through the dental instrument itself, to enable radiation directly into the interior of the tooth. For this purpose, in some embodiments of the invention the dental instrument includes a portion formed from a dielectric material which allows the energy to pass therethrough. In a particular embodiment, a dental drill includes an antenna near the distal end thereof, a capacitive top cap of which is made from hardened material shaped for removal of tooth material.

摘要: A device for converting DC to RF has a monolithic PIN diode adapted to be coupled to a DC supply. The diode receives light switching pulses and is coupled to a monolithic resonator. The monolithic form provides compactness and reliability, while the diode, which is reversed biased when OFF, prevents substrate leakage currents. The diode and the resonator can be made in a single substrate, e.g., silicon, or in different substrates, e.g., silicon for the diode to obtain a long carrier lifetime and, thus, minimize the light pulse repetition rate, and GaAs for the resonator to obtain a high Q. The resonator can also act as an impedance transformer.
