A coil electrode for use in an electrophysiology probe includes a first material having a relatively high radiopacity and a second material having a relatively high resiliency. This combination provides the necessary levels of durability, resiliency and radiopacity. An electrophysiological probe includes a support structure, at least one first electrode defining a first radiopacity supported on the support structure and at least one second electrode defining a second radiopacity supported on the support structure, the second radiopacity being greater than the first radiopacity. When viewed under a fluoroscope, the pattern of electrodes of varying radiopacities allows the physician to distinguish between individual electrodes.

Ablation systems comprise a support body, an energy transmitting element supported by the support body and an insulating member covering a portion of the support body and energy transmitting member. Ablation energy is transmitted from an uncovered, exposed portion of the energy transmitting element. The insulating member may be a distal portion of an introducer sheath. An open segment may be provided in the distal portion to expose a portion of the energy transmitting element. When used in cardiac ablation therapy, for example, the insulating member decreases the amount of ablation energy dissipated in the blood circulating through the heart and thermally insulates the energy transmitting member and the tissue at the ablation site, enabling better control of the ablation process. An inflatable balloon or an expandable web may be provided coupled to the distal portion of the sheath behind the open segment to provide further insulation of the energy transmitting element and of the tissue around the ablation site. In another embodiment, ablation catheters incorporate an insulating member such as the inflatable balloon, expandable web or a cover. Methods of ablating tissue are also disclosed.

The primer coating chemically bonds to the polymer substrate by developing covalent bonding or cross linking with the substrate. A plurality of printed electrode elements are then formed on the polymer body, e.g., by a pad printing process. Once the primer coating is bonded to the polymer body, the assembly is coated with a regenerated cellulose layer, e.g., by a viscose process well known in the art. The primer coating, already bonded to the catheter body, is then bonded with the regenerated cellulose at an elevated temperature. After curing, the polymer body, primer coating and regenerated cellulose layer become a single composite material, thereby preventing the regenerated cellulose coating from any movement relative to the polymer body, and providing a secure protective layer over the electrodes.
