Alkoxylated ether sulfate anionic surfactants of this invention are prepared by conventional procedures, e.g., oxyalkylation with propylene oxide or 1,2-butylene oxide of a straight chain plasticizer range alcohol; optionally followed by oxyalkylation with ethylene oxide or with a mixture of ethylene oxide and higher alkylene oxide; sulfation of the alkoxylated product; and neutralization of the sulfated derivative. The alkoxylated ether sulfate anionic surfactants of the present invention are liquids which exhibit superior detergency to polyester fabrics, excellent hard water stability, organic solubility, low foaming, low odor, and exhibit excellent compatibility with non-ionic and other surfactants in detergent formulations.

A process for the preparation of dimethyl adipate by the hydrogenation of dimethyl hex-3-endioate, having the formula CH.sub.3 O.sub.2 CCH.sub.2 CH.dbd.CHCH.sub.2 CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, derived from the oxidative carbonylation of 1,3-butadiene with a mixture of carbon monoxide and oxygen at a temperature of from 60.degree. The process comprises reacting a carbonyl-functionalized phenol with an alkylene oxide in the presence of a substantially non-crystalline double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst. The process offers fast reaction times at low catalyst levels, reduced problems with condensation side reactions, and low-color, low-viscosity, low-polydispersity alkoxylated phenols. The process enables efficient preparation of alkoxylated carbonyl-functonalized phenols that are especially valuable in the surfactant industry.

Olefins are epoxidized by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an organorhenium oxide catalyst and an alkyl aryl secondary alcohol solvent. High yields of epoxides with minimal non-selective loss of either hydrogen peroxide or olefin are realized. The epoxidation may comprise one step of an integrated process wherein an oxidant mixture is generated by molecular oxygen oxidation of the alkyl aryl secondary alcohol and used directly in the epoxidation without further purification or extraction.
