摘要: An object of the present invention is to provide a dispersion type liquid crystal electro-optical device comprising liquid crystal droplets of uniform size without impairing the scattering properties. The present invention realizes a liquid crystal electro-optical device having excellent scattering properties which is achieved by increasing or decreasing the fraction of the organic constituent of the light-transmitting resin material without changing the amount of the liquid crystal and the number and density of the liquid crystal droplets so that the light scattering properties of the device may not be impaired, and thereby controlling the precipitation temperature of the liquid crystal droplets from the mixture to the vicinity of a temperature convenient in the fabrication, so that the solidification temperature of the resin material can be set at the vicinity of that temperature.

摘要: A liquid crystal electro-optical device is fabricated by holding a mixture of a liquid crystal material and an uncured resin between a pair of substrates, precipitating the uncured resin from the mixture in the form of columns, and curing the thus precipitated columns of uncured resin. wherein a ultraviolet-curable resin is used as the sealing material and the uncured resin to cure the both by irradiating an ultraviolet radiation thereto. In this manner, the curing of the sealing material and the resin columns can be completed in a single process. Also, in a liquid crystal electro-optical device comprising a pair of substrates in which one of them is a light-transmitting substrate, a fabricating process comprises precipitating an uncured resin from a mixture of a liquid crystal material and a resin curable by either or both of ultraviolet radiation and heating, and curing the precipitated resin by irradiating an ultraviolet radiation and heating. Furthermore, the surface state of the plane of at least one of the substrates to be in contact with the liquid crystal mixture is partially modified or rendered hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic to control the precipitation position of the resin.

摘要: A liquid crystal display using a hydrophobic material as the material of resinous columns to orient the molecules of the liquid crystal parallel to the substrates. A hydrophilic material can also be used as the material of resinous columns to orient the molecules of the liquid crystal vertical to the substrates. The liquid crystal molecules are oriented horizontally by making the surface tension of the orientation film greater than the surface tension of the resinous columns. The liquid crystal molecules are oriented vertically by making the surface tension of the orientation film smaller than the surface tension of the resinous columns. A mixture of a liquid crystal material and an uncured resin is placed in a liquid crystal cell. The uncured resin is precipitated (deposited) out of the mixture. The molecules of the liquid crystal material are oriented. Then, the uncured resin is cured. Thereafter, an aging step for reorienting the molecules of the liquid crystal material is carried out. This prevents disturbance of the orientation around the resinous columns and leads to an improvement in the voltage holding ratio.

摘要: The present invention provides a method of fabricating a dispersion-type liquid crystal electro-optical device comprising a pair of substrates disposed opposite to each other with a space therebetween and provided with electrodes respectively on their inner surfaces, and a liquid crystal mixture containing a liquid crystal and a transparent resin and sandwiched between the pair of substrates. The method comprises steps of: filling up the space between the pair of substrates with the fluid liquid crystal mixture, applying a voltage across the electrodes to apply an electric field to the fluid liquid crystal mixture to collect the charge of the fluid liquid crystal mixture in the vicinity of the electrodes; and setting the transparent resin. The dispersion-type liquid crystal electro-optical device has a high voltage retention and a low transmissivity in the scattering state, and is capable of clearly displaying pictures at a high contrast ratio.

摘要: In an active matrix semiconductor display device in which pixel TFTs and driver circuit TFT are formed on the same substrate in an integral manner, the cell gap is controlled by gap retaining members that are disposed between a pixel area and driver circuit areas. This makes it possible to provide a uniform cell thickness profile over the entire semiconductor display device. Further, since conventional grainy spacers are not used, stress is not imposed on the driver circuit TFTs when a TFT substrate and an opposed substrate are bonded together. This prevents the driver circuit TFTs from being damaged.

摘要: There is disclosed a lightweight and small liquid crystal display which achieves low power consumption and in which the optical anisotropy of the liquid crystal material is compensated for in order to enhance the viewing angle characteristics and the response speed of the liquid crystal material. Display electrodes and a common electrode are formed on one of the substrates. The orientation of the liquid crystal material is of the HAN (hybrid alignment nematic) type. This compensates for the optical anisotropy of the liquid crystal material and improves the response speed.
