A pressure regulating device for use in a hydraulic control system for an automatic transmission having a torque convertor, a gear transmission and an hydraulic control system provides a first pressure regulating valve for regulating the pressurized fluid output from a pump to a line pressure level, and applying the line pressure to the hydraulic control system. A second pressure regulating valve regulates the pressure of an excess portion of fluid supplied to the hydraulic control system from the first pressure regulating valve, and supplies the excess fluid to the torque convertor and regions requiring lubrication. Overheating of fluid in the torque convertor is prevented at low pressures by a bypass passage which assures at least a minimum fluid flow through the torque convertor at all times.

An accumulator for a hydraulic control system of frictional engagement mechanisms comprises a housing with a stepped bore, a first stepped piston reciprocable within the bore to form a back pressure chamber communicated with a source of line pressure, a second piston reciprocable within the first piston in a predetermind stroke to form an accumulation chamber communicated with the line pressure source, and a spring for biasing the second piston toward the accumulation chamber. In the initial stage, only the second piston is retracted against biasing force of the spring to modulate the line pressure acting on the frictional engagement mechanisms and is engaged at its retracted stroke end with the first piston. Subsequently, the first piston is retracted together with the second piston against the biasing force and the pressure in the back pressure chamber to further modulate the line pressure.

The control system comprises: a vehicle speed detector for detecting the running speed of a vehicle; a speed demand change detector for detecting a signal corresponding to the speed demand change by the driver; a setting device for setting the target speed of the vehicle to a predetermined value when the vehicle speed is higher than a preset value and the speed demand change is lower than a preset value; and a torque ratio controller for controlling the torque ratio between the input shaft and output shaft of the continuously variable transmission in accordance with the predetermined value of the target vehicle speed.

The vibration-absorbing members 6, 7 are constituted by a first retainer 6 which clamps one block 2 of the mutually adjacent blocks 2, 3, and a second retainer 7 which clamps the other block 3, these retainers being intervening between the mutually adjacent blocks 2, 3. Accordingly, neighboring blocks 2, 3 are reliably prevented by the vibration-absorbing members 6, 7 from directly colliding with each other, as a result of which noise can be effectively reduced. A belt driven continuously variable transmission unit which converts the rotation of the input member by continuously variable ratios, and a gear unit such as a planetary gear unit to which the output torque from said continuously variable transmission unit and torque from said input member transmitted through a transfer unit is fed and delivered to the output member, are provided. A clutch and arresting member, such as a brake and one-way clutch are provided on the input path to said gear unit from said transfer unit. When the arresting member is actuated to low speed mode, the gear unit functions as a reduction mechanism, whereas when the arresting member is engaged to high speed mode, the gear unit functions as a split-drive mechanism which combines the output torque from said continuously variable transmission unit with the torque transmitted through said transfer unit. Formation of torque loop is prevented while combining the torques, by driving the element of the gear unit which supports reaction when the gear unit is functioning as a reduction mechanism.
