The present invention is a method for increasing the melt strength of a polyethylene resin comprising reacting the polyethylene resin with a free radical generator with a decomposition energy in between −50 kJoule/mole and −250 kJoules/mole and a peak decomposition temperature of less than 280 degree C. The resulting resin has increased melt strength with higher ratio of elongational viscosities at 0.1 to 100 rad/s when compared to substantially similar polyethylene resins which have not been reacted with a free radical generator such as an alkoxy amine derivative.

Disclosed is an ethylene-based polymer with a density from about 0.90 to about 0.94 in grams per cubic centimeter, with a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) from about 2 to about 30, a melt index (I2) from about 0.1 to about 50 grams per 10 minutes, and further comprising sulfur from about 5 to about 4000 parts per million. The amount of sulfur is also determined based upon the total weight of the ethylene-based polymer. Also disclosed is process for making an ethylene-based polymer which includes the steps of splitting a process fluid for delivery into a tubular reactor; feeding an upstream process feed stream into a first reaction zone and at least one downstream process feed stream into at least one other reaction zone, where the process fluid has an average velocity of at least 10 meters per second; and initiating a free-radical polymerization reaction.

The present invention relates to particular ethylene-based polymer compositions suitable for use in binder fiber applications. The materials are characterized in having a peak recrystallization temperature in the range of from 85° C. to 110 C, and a Comonomer Distribution Constant (“CDC”) of 55 or greater. The materials are also characterized by having a tan delta value at 0.1 rad/sec from about 15 to 50, and a complex viscosity at 0.1 rad/second of 1400 Pa·sec or less.

An ethylene-based polymer composition has been discovered and is characterized by a Comonomer Distribution Constant greater than about 45. The new ethylene-based polymer compositions are useful for making many articles, especially including films. Formulations made into films comprising the new polymers are also disclosed, especially blends with synthetic polymer like LDPE where the % LDPE is less than 50% in which the MD shrink tension is greater than 15 cN, puncture is greater than 75 ft-lb/in3, and haze is less than 20%. The polymers are made using a metal complex of a polyvalent aryloxyether.
