Composite particles include a core comprising a layered lithium metal oxide having an O3 crystal structure. A shell layer having an O3 crystal structure encloses the core. The shell layer includes an oxygen-loss, layered lithium metal oxide. The core comprises from 30 to 85 mole percent of the composite particles. A cathode and a lithium-ion battery including the composite particles, and methods of making the foregoing are also disclosed.

The invention concerns compositions comprising a nucleic acid mimic. The compositions may be used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases amenable through modulation of nucleic acids which encode proteins that are implicated in disease states. In accordance with preferred embodiments, mimics are comprised of non-naturally occurring backbones to which are appended modified heterocyclic bases. Such bases preferably have sterically bulky substituents 1, 2, or 3 atoms removed from the sites of attachment to the backbone.

An electrode composition for a lithium-ion battery comprising particles having an average particle size ranging from 1 μm to 50 μm. The particles include an electrochemically active phase and an electrochemically inactive phase that share a common phase boundary. The electrochemically active phase includes elemental silicon and the electrochemically inactive phase includes at least two metal elements in the form of an intermetallic compound, a solid solution, or combination thereof. Each of the phases is free of crystallites that are greater than 1000 angstroms prior to cycling. In addition, the electrochemically active phase is amorphous after the electrode has been cycled through one full charge-discharge cycle in a lithium-ion battery.
