Abstract:
Hydroelectric pumped-storage includes monitoring electrical demand on a system over time. If the monitored demand exceeds a predetermined first value, fluid is allowed to flow substantially under the influence of gravity from a first aquifer to a second aquifer. Kinetic energy from the flowing fluid is converted into electrical energy. If the monitored demand drops below a predetermined second value, fluid from the second aquifer is moved to the first aquifer.
Abstract:
A pill crusher device and method including a base and a lid movable between open and closed positions with respect to the base. The base includes a pill cup holder for holding a cup with one or more pills therein. The cup may include a flange that is keyed to the cup holder to prevent the cup from rotating with the cup holder. A head protrudes from the inside surface of the lid and is shaped to nest within the cup either directly against the pills, or against a second cup placed in the first cup with the pills located between the two cups.

Abstract:
An electronically actuated valve assembly for an internal combustion engine is disclosed, wherein the valve assembly comprises a valve stem, a shape memory alloy actuator in operative communication with the valve stem, a coolant passage through which at least a portion of the shape memory alloy actuator extends, and a cooling fluid source in communication with the coolant passage.
Abstract:
An oil supply system for an internal combustion engine camshaft includes an oil distribution block configured for attachment to an engine structure adjacent to and above a camshaft, with attachment of the oil distribution block occurring after the camshaft has been installed in the engine. Fixed and movable ring segments, which are mounted to the oil distribution block, cooperate to provide the camshaft with oil under pressure, which may be used for controlling auxiliary devices such as a camshaft phaser or camshaft profile switching mechanism.
Abstract:
A differential assembly includes a housing defining a space containing a volume of hydraulic fluid, the housing including interior surfaces. A gear that rotates in the housing includes surfaces that pass through the fluid as the gear rotates and on which the fluid is carried to the interior surfaces of the housing. A bearing located in the housing is supplied with fluid from a fluid path that hydraulically connects the interior surfaces and the bearing.
Abstract:
Clam shell-type blow mold apparatus has a pair of opposed upper mold halves that cooperate to define a partial blow cavity. A one-piece bottom mold portion that completes the blow cavity is locked up against the top mold portion by a locking assembly to prevent separation of the bottom mold portion from the top mold portion during the high pressure blow cycle. The locking assembly includes a support ring for the bottom mold portion that has a number of radially outwardly projecting male lugs adapted to fit into female receiving notches on opposed halves of a lock ring on the upper mold portion. Individual ledges at the bottoms of the notches underlie the lugs of the support ring when the mold halves are fully closed so as to preclude separation of the support ring, and thus the bottom mold portion, from the lock ring and the upper mold portion. The notches in the support ring are interposed between pairs of bolt holes in the lock ring.
Abstract:
A method of automated sleep behavior modification for insomnia and other sleep problems using a computerized treatment system including: determining a baseline sleep pattern of a user and storing in the system data indicative of the baseline sleep pattern; generating a sleep behavior regimen based on the stored sleep pattern data and a behavior modification algorithm, wherein the algorithm generates sleep inducement behavior prompts; prompting the user to perform a predetermined sleep inducement behavior at a time determined by the regimen; tracking the sleep behavior of the user and storing data indicative of the tracked sleep behavior; modifying the regimen based on the tracked sleep behavior, and prompting the user to perform the predetermined sleep inducement behavior at a time determined by the modified regimen.
Abstract:
A miniature optical system for use in instruments based on laser spectroscopy of atomic and molecular samples, such as atomic frequency standards and magnetometers. The miniature optical system employs a folded optical path that allows light from a laser diode to pass through the cell twice, reflecting from a mirror and returning to a photodetector co-located with the laser diode. This efficient packaging arrangement allows the laser diode and photodetector to be fabricated on the same semiconductor substrate and allows essentially all of the gas cell volume to be utilized, without additional optical components for collimation. Fabrication of the laser source and detector on a single substrate permits cost-effective batch processing and parallel testing of the key active components.
