Disclosed are a personal video recorder (PVR) using metadata and a recording control method thereof that facilitates the selective recording of user-preferred segments of a broadcast program in real time. The PVR includes a broadcast receiver for receiving the digital broadcast and dividing the digital broadcast program into video data, audio data, and metadata. The PVR also includes a DS analyzer for analyzing the metadata and outputting program-related information corresponding to the digital broadcast program, a user input unit for receiving recording preference information from a user for recording the digital broadcast program, a program information processor for filtering the program-related information using the user-supplied recording preference information, a synchronous buffer for temporarily storing the video data and the audio data, a recording unit for encoding and storing the video data and the audio data temporarily stored in the synchronous buffer, and a control unit for comparing the filtered program information with the recording preference information and controlling the synchronous buffer and the recording unit in accordance with the results of a comparison.

Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for quantitatively measuring a delay caused according to communication environments during a transmission of multimedia data, particularly, MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group)-2 TS (Transport Stream), in a multimedia system. The apparatus includes a transmitter that generates and transmits a counter information packet (CIP), which is required to measure the delay in the transmission of the multimedia data, by inserting into the multimedia data the results of counting predetermined bits using a first counter; and a receiver that receives the CIP and computes the delay by comparing the counting results in the CIP with counting results received from a second counter.

A method of enabling transmission of a time-critical control signal event in a sync frame period, such as a pause signal that is generated when the receive buffer of an Ethernet switch is filled with packets beyond a threshold due to congestion of uplink asynchronous data, is disclosed. To transmit time-critical information in a synchronous Ethernet system, a current transmission period is checked upon detection of a time-critical event. If the current transmission period is a sync frame period, time-critical control information is generated, inserted into the first sub-sync frame after the time-critical event, and transmitted. If the current transmission period is an async frame period, a control frame including the time-critical control information is generated and transmitted.

A subscriber interface, positioned in the ONU, modulates a first predetermined number of broadcasting signals selected by a subscriber among broadcasting signals received from an OLT, combines a baseband communication signal received from the OLT with the modulated broadcasting signals, and optically transmits the combined communication-broadcasting signal. An EPON for providing a subscriber with a high speed/high capacity data service and a real time digital broadcasting/image service includes an OLT for switching digital broadcasting/image data according to broadcasting/image selection information from each ONT, modulating the switched data into frequencies assigned to each ONT, coupling a broadcasting/image signal with a communication signal, and transmitting the coupled signal. The digital broadcasting/image data is transmitted from an outside broadcaster, the broadcasting/image signal is a combination of the modulated signals, and the communication signal is obtained by optically modulating communication data from an IP network. Further included in the EPON are multiple ONTs, and a divider for dividing the signal from the OLT for routing to each of the multiple ONTs, combining signals from the multiple ONTs, and transmitting the combined signal to the OLT.
