    摘要: A magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate, an underlayer provided on the substrate and having a high permeability magnetic film and a relative permeability in all directions in the film surface of not less than 800, and a recording medium layer provided on the underlayer and having a perpendicular anisotropy. The recording and reproduction characteristics of this magnetic recording medium do not vary even when the direction of movement thereof with respect to a magnetic head varies. When it is applied to a magnetic disc, preferable results can be obtained.

    摘要: A magnetic storage device has a recording density of over 5 gigabits per square inch. In the magnetic layer, the magnetic crystal grains of the granular structure are separated by a nonmagnetic phase. The typical crystal grain is in the approximate shape of a sphere or an ellipsoid. The thickness of the magnetic crystal grains, which is in the direction perpendicular to the surface of the film, is smaller than that of the thickness of the magnetic film. The ratio of the coercive force which is measured in the circumferential direction to the coercive force which is measured in the radial direction, which is the orientation ratio of the coercive force, is larger than 1.0, but preferably not greater than 3.0. Further, the area fraction of the magnetic grains having an extended axis within 30° from the circumferential direction is equal to or more than 45%.

    摘要: A magnetic disk unit of form factor size with a low power consumption, a short average seek time and a high performance. The unit includes at least two spindles for supporting and rotating magnetic disks. Specifically, two 1.3-inch disks, three 1.0-inch disks or four 0.7-inch disks are arranged in a housing originally intended for a 1.8-inch magnetic disk. The unit further includes a device for writing and reading information while selecting a spindle. The card-type disk unit thus can be reduced in thickness, with a smaller power consumption for starting the disk rotation and further with an improved average seek velocity.

A fast R/W-IC having a line width of not more than 0.35 &mgr;m is also provided. The magnetic head is provided with a reading element including one of a giant magnetoresistance effect element and a thin film having tunneling-magnetoresistance effect, with an effective track width of not more than 0.9 &mgr;m, and performs the reading of magnetic information at an areal density of not less than 5 Gb/in2.
