Abstract:
An embosser/laminator machine has an adhesive unit releasably connectable with a main frame structure of the machine, and a roll extractor configured to move a roll between the main frame structure and an exchange position between the main frame structure and the adhesive unit when the adhesive unit is spaced from the main frame structure during removal and installation of the roll. The sub-frame comprising the adhesive unit may be formed with a bearing cap that cooperates with the main frame structure such that when the adhesive unit is connected with the main frame structure, the roll is operatively secured to the machine between main frame structure and the sub-frame of the adhesive unit for normal operation of the machine. When the sub-frame comprising the adhesive unit is released and spaced from main frame structure, the roll may be removed from and installed into the main frame structure.
Abstract:
A stack of folded sheets comprises first and second groups of folded sheets. Each of the sheets if each group includes a center panel, it second panel, and a V-shaped portion including third and fourth panels. The sheets of the two groups are alternately arranged so that the second panel of each sheet of each group is adjacent a fourth panel of a sheet of the other group. The adjacent second and fourth panels may or may not be interleaved.Adjustable folding boards are provided for folding elongated webs into the first and second folded sheets. Each of the folding boards includes a slidably mounted first plate which folds the fourth panel of the folded sheet. A second plate extends downwardly from the first plate and is also slidably mounted for movement transversely to the web. Third and fourth plates are mounted in front of the second plate.Adjusting the first and second plates relative to the web changes the width of the fourth panel. Adjusting the third panel relative to the web changes the widths of the central panel and the third panel. Adjusting the fourth plate relative to the web changes the widths of the central panel and the second panel.
Abstract:
A stiffening device for a web destined to be wound in a log by a winding unit of a re-winding machine forms on the web at least one longitudinal strip of greater thickness, so as to obtain in the log at least one sector with a greater stiffness to avoid deformation of the log during winding.
Abstract:
A method of operating an orbital saw to transversely sever superposed elongated web plies into shorter length products which includes advancing along a linear path superposed elongated web plies having a cross sectional area of at least about 3.5 square inches (2200 mm.sup.2), providing a 4-bar linkage including first and second bars extending generally parallel to each other and third and fourth bars connecting the first and second bar means adjacent the ends thereof, further providing a disc blade rotatably mounted on each of the third and fourth bars, rotating the first bar about a first axis to orbit the blades with the blade orbit intersecting the linear path with the centers of said disc blades being at least 30 inches (750 mm) apart while skewing the first axis at a minor acute angle to the linear path, connecting the first and the second bar with the third and fourth bar to provide at least one degree of pivotal freedom of the third and fourth bars relative to the first and second bars, and rotating the second bar about a second axis different from the first axis to compensate for the skewing and to orient the disc blades perpendicular to the web plies in the linear path when severing the web plies.
Abstract:
A method of operating an orbital saw for transversely severing elongated, superposed, multi-ply web material which includes advancing the web material along a path into a cutting station having a skew arm adjacent said path, rotating said arm about an axis skewed with respect to the path, the skew arm having a disc blade coupling means, such as a 4-bar linkage, mounted thereon and carrying a rotating disc blade with the blade axis spaced from the arm axis to cause the blade to intersect the path and cut the web material during the blade orbit, maintaining the blade axis at an angle skewed relative to the arm axis to position the disc blade continually perpendicular to the path whereby the disc blade makes a square cut through the web material, providing the coupling means with a grinding stone for the blade and a control for contacting the grinding stone and blade, and positioning the grinding stone radially inwardly throughout the entirety of the blade orbit whereby centrifugal forces are reduced and cyclic loading is substantially eliminated.
Abstract:
A controller for detecting abnormal operating conditions of a continuous motion machine such as a packaging machine. The acceleration and velocity of motors for the various axes of the machine are examined by the controller and rapid deceleration or a more gradual deceleration to a lower velocity relative to a machine velocity are employed for stopping the machine when overloads in the form of jams or mechanical faults occur in moving parts of the machine. By using this system, machine overloads can be detected much earlier than by using conventional techniques, and as a result, damage resulting from overloads and nuisance tripping can be eliminated or greatly reduced.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for transversely sealing multi-ply diaper webs including an ultrasonic horn assembly above the web and an anvil assembly below the web, and including orbiting the two assemblies with points of orbit intersection at two spaced apart points on the web and with one of the assemblies being resiliently mounted so as to yield when the two assemblies come in contact during sealing.
Abstract:
A coreless surface winder and method wherein one of the winding rollers is accompanied by a slightly spaced apart arcuate dead plate which operates to cause a folded leading edge on a transversely severed web to roll upon itself and develop an incipient log which thereafter is completed in a conventional three roll cradle to provide a coreless retail sized roll.
Abstract:
Apparatus for producing disposable diaper type products such as diapers per se and training pants in which leg elastic strands are captured between a pair of webs which are thereafter united with a fluff pad-equipped web and wherein guide members are employed for traversing the elastic strands to abut leg openings in the diaper type product.
Abstract:
Flexographic press structure and operation which includes a plurality of decks each removably supporting a plate roll and an anilox roll with each roll including a sleeve rotatably mounted on a stationary mandrel and supported at the ends thereof, the press is equipped with a lifter at one end to free each roll from its support at the other end whereby the sleeve can be removed over the other end.
