Apparatus is provided for handling bobbins and particularly for transferring bobbins from one location to another. The apparatus includes a cart having parallel linkages pivotally mounted thereon and connected to a fluid-operated ram. A bobbin-engaging unit is carried at the ends of the linkages and engages the bobbin internally. After engagement, the linkages are manipulated to transfer the bobbin to another location with the weight of the bobbin and mechanism being offset by the fluid-operated cylinder. The cart is designed to be attached to a portable bobbin buggy so that both can then be pushed as a unit to move the buggy to a desired location from which the bobbins are transferred to a creel or rack, for example.

A spool gripper is coupled to any one of the flanges provided at both sides of a spool wound with a semiconductor device bonding wire thereon. The spool gripper has an inner diameter portion for receiving a spool holder when the spool is fitted to the spool holder, a coupling portion coupled to the circumference of the flange while bearing a diameter larger than the inner diameter portion, and an outer diameter portion with a diameter larger than the coupling portion. The worker grips the outer diameter portion to handle the spool. The handling of the spool can be made without directly touching the spool. The wire bonding operation is made while the gripper is coupled to the flange. Therefore, it is not necessary to decouple the gripper from the flange to make the wire bonding operation. Accordingly, the durability of the gripper and the reliability in the spool holding can be maintained without deterioration while preventing separation of the spool from the gripper. Irrespective of the length of the spool holder or the presence of the spool fixation member, the spool handling unit can be used with any type spool holder.

A stepped diameter holder having sets of gripper elements is supported on an angled arm driven by a rotary actuator. After insertion of the stepped diameter into a roll core and outward movement of the gripper elements, the core can be moved to a horizontal orientation by oscillation of the actuator. The stepped diameter holder has a ball locking assembly which is inserted into a receptacle attached to the projecting end of the spindle. After full insertion sensed by blockage of air flow out of a hole in the end of an actuator rod caused by contact with a compressible insert, the actuator rod is moved axially to dock the spindle to the stepped holder by operation of the ball locking assembly and the gripper elements are released, allowing powered push off of the roll onto the spindle.
